Vols still unable to win a "Meaningful" game.

Players have to make shots though. You can't get much more open than Chism. And that was an uncontested shot from one of his favorite spots on the floor. Tatum also had a wide open look from the wing that could have put the vols up. Pealr cant put the ball in the basket for these guys. We had two chances to take the lead in the final 30 seconds of play

Pearl may not be able to put the ball in the basket for them but he can sit them when they take a 3 when you only trail by 1 point. He can sit what are supposed to be your 2 best players (Hopson and Smith) when they consistently disappear when needed the most or throw the ball out of ball repeatedly.

so you are saying its better to not take the wide open uncontested shot? Chism is one of the best shooters on the team from that spot on the floor.

What is the meaning of this part of the post , I havnt seen the the last couple of Vols BB games ? ...Anyone ?

In the first 3 games he was shooting 80% from the field and dropping 25 a game on high school teams, which lead to a thread started in his honor named Scotty "Lottery Pick" Hopson.

Which he promptly followed with 2 games, one against a big east team and one against a top ten team, with performances equal to that of Michael Porter.

Not slamming anyone here, just putting it into perspective.

I say be agressive and take the ball to the basket, the way those refs were calling fouls he would have at least got a foul call. I am not blaming the lose only on him, Smith and Hopson really did not even show up.

I have to admit that until the mens BB team wins a trophy of some kind (did they get a trophy for the regular season SEC title?) We are not for real.

I am seeing the pattern emerge of always coming up short to get the trophy and must admit that is is getting a little old.

Are these guys for real or not? So far they are not.

Yeah, we have lost almost all meaningful games under Pearl, but the win the against #1 Memphis has to count for something...I would consider that meaningful. But you are still right, we have to start winning meaningful tournament games.

Dane Bradshaw was the coach then .

Are you kidding me? You cannot tell me that was the “best” play our coach could come up with. (Scarier yet, perhaps it is). I saw the same deficiencies that I have seen for years (weak PG play, poor decision making in the clutch, etc.). What do you see different?

i agree going to the basket should be option one which it looked like it was but maze kicked when the defenders ran at him. i would rather see chism catch and shoot then try to penetrate though

point guard play is terrible and will be what kills u s in the end i agree on that. just dont think it was that bad of a shot. he was wide open from a spot he shoots very well from

There was still probably about 4 or 5 seconds on the clock when he took that shot, maybe Pearl should have called t.o. I just like being aggressive in that situation. Taking that 3 is the easy way out. This team is soft and has been under Pearl and don't really seeing that changing.

Goins/Maze
McBee/Hopson
Tatum/Prince
Smith/Hall
Chism/Hall

That should be our 9 man rotation..... Woolridge and Williams add nothing to this team other than some fouls

Hall can't back up both Smith and Chism. You need someone else to play down low. He's also not ready for that much PT. Williams played some good D last night.

The doomsday rhetoric is a bit ridiculous. We lost to the #6 team in the country by 1 point. It was a tough loss, but it's a long season, and we have a lot of other big games to play. I agree that this team has some areas to improve, but to say that we are incapable of winning a big game is premature when we've only played 1.

Gentlemen,

What gives you cause for optimism when we see the same mistakes, style of play, weaknesses that we have seen for years. What is going to change between now and March when it has not changed in 4 years?

First, this year we have SENIOR leadership. Maybe it isn't obvious yet, because the season is still young and the players are still gelling together. But having the experience is no doubt going to help us come tourny time. Chism looked great, Tatum and Williams have progressed tremendously since last year, and we have tons of depth. Secondly, this team is much different than the team we had last year in that we can pressure the ball. When you press like Bruce is trying to this early in the season, you are going to give up some easy baskets, but you are going to force turnovers too. Lastnight we kept the game close with two of our best players, Hopson and Smith, having very below average games. Hopson will gain confidence as the season goes on, even more than he has from last year, and Bruce will coach him to play under control.

My question to those who are doubting this team so much is.. "Why have the "the sky is falling" mentality about a team who is only 5 games into the season and lost a close game to a good team. If Tatum or Chism's three's at the end of the game would have fallen, we would have won. I know I'm playing the "IF" game, but seriously. In basketball sometimes the shots fall and sometimes they don't. But it isn't time to flush the season after a 1 pt loss to a #6 team.

Well said. You could see Smith & Chism leading this team. Take a look at the FT's in crunch time. Tatum is also starting to step up. They were doubling on Smith everytime he got the ball in the paint. That's when players like Tatum & Hopson need to step up and hit the open shot.

you just use a 3 man rotation at the 4/5 spot

It's possible, but it's just asking a lot of Hall. He'd be playing about 20 minutes/game. He'd also be giving up a lot of size to the bigger post players out there. I think he'll be a really good player, but I don't think he's ready for that yet.

DePaul isn't a good team by any stretch of the imagination. They didn't win a single conference game last year.

Piss poor clock management....we had a TO but didn't use it.... Hopson is killing us, he needs to refocus...Woolridge should never see the floor....... good guards are going to kill us all year.....we still lack that lock up defender

Thank you for your summary of last season.
