I found this chart on VQ, and I thought it was interesting. This is a comparison on UTs stats through the first 3 games of '08 and '09. The better stats are the ones in yellow. A few things caught my eye:

1. Offensive Rushing Yards
2. How much the penalties went down
3. Defensive 3rd Down Efficiency
4. Defensive Total Yards

HAHA at the defensive 3rd down percentage!! Thank god that Chavis's sorry butt is out of here. I don't care if we sacked the QB twice in a row, it doesn't help when the offense converts on 3rd and a mile (known better as 3rd and Chavis to us folks who had to put up with it forever)

Hard to believe the 2008 D only had 5 turnovers after 3 games. How many came from the UCLA game? At least 4.

Nice find, LV. Our running game is of course our bread and butter. Other teams know this and we are still moving the ball consistently. Hardesty is having a spectacular season so far as he is currently #9 in the nation in rushing(64 att; 345 yds; 5.4 avg; 4 tds). I have been super impressed with how much discipline we have played with so far this year. No stupid penalties, drive killers, etc. Our defense speaks for itself. Went from great last year to looking even better so far this year IMO.

And I think that most would agree that this year's UCLA and UF teams are more highly touted than last years

Couple thoughts:

UF was 8-13 on third down. UT had only allowed 4-25 before that this year.

WKU really skews those stats. UAB last year was a much better team than WKU this year.

Compare the stats between 2008 UCLA, UF to 2009 UCLA, UF. I think that will paint you a more accurate picture of the differences.

And is anyone worried about the passing game? UT is worse passing the ball this year than they were last year. If not for the WKU game, the passing stats would be utterly terrible.

No they aren't. They just aren't passing the ball as much. And UAB lost 8 games last year. They had the last ranked defense in the NCAA.

Regardless, stats are not required to see that UT is better in 2009 than they were in 2008. If you can't see it, you need to refrain from commenting on football.

And I'm not really sure why you're expending all this energy arguing that UT isn't any good. If we suck, you have some serious problems with your team.

I didn't say they sucked, I said the passing game is worse than last year.

Obviously the team as a whole is playing better. Although, the w/l results aren't matching the effort yet.

UT's passing game didn't win even won game for them last year. All five wins came off the strength of our running game.
