Vols Spring Football Practice #9

Was listening to Josh Pate podcast today and on Vols, he basically said you've got to assume JH will have the offense ready, but really spent time talking about potential surprise of D...says Hubbs and a number of others behind the scenes are saying we're ahead of schedule, w/ PSU players coming over w/ Knowles helping integrate the D. If we get D right, it helps cover other sins. So hard to tell much in spring ball... I do think WRs will help whoever the QB is...we didn't have this sort of bench w/ Joe/Nico's years.
Giving Knowles carte blanche was right move

Tbf, I like Josh Pate, but he is often a little bit high on a bunch of teams, like saying Nebraska will go 11-1 next year, and after how this season went saying we had the best home atmosphere in college football even though we went 1-3 in SEC play at home

Really? OL play doesn’t matter? What about WR play? Defense? Some of you need to realize that football is the ultimate team sport. I don’t care how good the QB is, if the team around him isn’t that good then it doesn’t matter.
Pretty much correct but without decent QB play, the WRs don't really matter. If the QB throws a ton of interceptions that hurts the defense. If the QB cant hand the ball off correctly it hurts the RB. Football may indeed be a team sport but QB is the most important position. With a truly great QB you can overcome other issues much easier. With a bad one it can and will affect every position.

What you said about a truly great QB isn’t always true. We had Peyton and couldn’t win anything of significance. Then we had below average QB play with Tee and won a NC. Tom Brady threw for over 500 yards and like 4 TDs against the Eagles and lost the SB.

The bottom line is 99% of the time you need a competent team to win. There are always going to be rare occasions where the great QB does most of the work but that’s rare.

I didn't say that the qb had to do most of the work and i also didnt say that you didnt need a competent team. I said that qb is the most important position. Without atleast decent play you wont win many games. But the fact remains that a great qb can and will contribute to winning more games.

And what are you talking about peyton for? He averaged like 11 wins per season. Thats alot of winning. May not have translated to championships but he won alot.

And tee martin was an excellent game manger in 98. May not have the flash but he translated that into being drafted.

Tom brady for real? Dude it was a super bowl. Both teams had great qbs otherwise they dont reach the super bowl.

But speaking about tom brady he kinda proves my point. 2019 patriots went 12-4. Brady leaves the very next season the patriots have a losing record. Their first losing season in 20 years. What was tom brady doing in 2020? He took a team that was 7-9 and won a superbowl. Great qbs can change everything.

I think the OL is more important than QB. A great QB can make a mediocre QB look good. Whereas I don’t care how great the QB is, if the OL is bad then the QB is screwed.

Trent Dilfer? The Bucs didn’t just bring in Brady. Gronk, and multiple key acquisitions.
