KNOXVILLE -- Tennessee's search for an offensive coordinator to replace Randy Sanders could extend to the NFL.
A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Daily Times on Thursday that four potential candidates, including Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Dan Henning, were on a possible short list in addition to David Cutcliffe. According to the source, other names on the list were Maryland offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe, former Florida Gators head coach and current Penn State offensive coordinator Galen Hall and one unidentified candidate.
Sanders, who resigned Monday amidst the worst of his seven seasons as the Vols' offensive director, will remain on staff as quarterbacks coach through the remainder of the season. He will not be on the sidelines during Tennessee's final four games, and coach Phillip Fulmer is expected to assume virtually all play-calling duties.
But Fulmer on Tuesday revealed he had gotten immediate interest from prospective replacements following the resignation of Sanders, a Vol coach the past 17 years.
Cutcliffe, Tennessee's offensive coordinator from 1993-98, was fired from Mississippi following the 2004 season. Cutcliffe, who accepted a post as Charlie Weis' offensive coordinator at Notre Dame in the spring but later resigned because of needing heart triple-bypass surgery, currently resides in Knoxville. He has said he would discuss the position with Fulmer at an appropriate time but prefers to find a head coaching position.
Henning is both a former NFL and college head coach. The offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins Super Bowling winning teams in 1983 and 1988, had head coaching positions at Boston College and San Diego before taking over as Panthers director of offense in 2002.
Vols fans should remember Taaffe. His offense drubbed the Tennessee defense in the 2002 Peach Bowl against Maryland. Taaffe coached in the Canadian Football League as head coach of the Montreal Alouettes in 1999-2000. He has seen coaching stints at several ACC schools including Virginia, NC State and Georgia Tech.
Hall is in his first season as the Nittany Lions' offensive coordinator. He coached briefly with the Dallas Cowboys as running backs coach. He also led the Rhein Fire to a pair of NFL Europe titles as head coach from 1995-2000.
