still 21 games to go. we really need to win 13 or 14 of these. this weekend is BIG with miss st. lose 2 out of three and uh-oh----- pardon, but 19 games to go. only 4 non-con games to go and 15 con games left. need to win at least 11 or 12 more and have a good sec tourney. long ways to go----we'll see. GBO !!!!

Certainly wish we were playing at home. We did take one from SC on the road in a tough environment. We need to win the next two series and the mid week games.

I'm not dismissing that we've lost our last 5 of 7.

I think what's really interesting, based on Serrano's comments...We are better, and getting better faster than even he anticipated and that has raised his expectations for what the team can accomplish THIS season.

I don't know if the RPI is a reflection of that, but looking at the schedule, we could have a very respectable RPI at the end of the regular season...If we can win the ones we're s'posed to win.

Austin Peay, Memphis and MTSU have RPI's above 100 +....auburn is at 63

Perfect Game has MSU ranked at 50 in their new poll, I think we have about the same overall record...has me wondering if we'd be ranked if we win the series?

that's 14 more wins. we probably could win the 4 non-con games, but we would have to have 10 more wins counting the sec tourney. that's pretty tough, but---- who knows ?

Tenn will get in with less than 35wins IMO. 32-33 should do it.

I asked Kendall Rogers, in a chat, about our chances against MSU this weekend. His response:

An absolute must-win series for the Volunteers if they want to be a serious postseason contender at the end of the season. They played very well at times against Florida, but just couldn't seal the deal.

He didn't really answer the question, but those are his thoughts.

Memphis would hurt worse than AP because of their poor winning %. AP has a very high winning % and its my understanding that RPI relies heavily on that.

I agree with him. If the Vols lose this series I am afraid Hoover is in jeopardy.

Me too. I stated above in the thread, we really need to take the next two. I wonder about Vandy, I keep waiting for them to turn it around, i expect them to do so.

Then we have Ole Miss and Arky. The good news is that we get both at home. I don't feel uber confident about getting more than one win in either of those.

So, yes...we need to take MSU and Auburn series and win the mid week games. I put the number of wins we need at 11. Tough hill to climb.

In addition, if it played out that we win 11, it would give us a 14-16 record in SEC play. Last year Alabama, got in with that record...it would give us 32 wins on the season.

We're talkin NCAA here...I think 12-18 gets us to Hoover.

well, we all know we have to get to hoover before we get an at large bid. finishing 11th or 12th in the sec won't get us an at large ncaa bid. we can only hope the vols play their best baseball in the next 6 weeks, because that is what it will take to go to the ncaa's.

Finishing 11th or 12th won't even get us to Hoover. I've been listening to Serrano's comments in his post game interviews. He's really trying to get the players to recognize that they indeed do have a chance to do something special. He doesn't want to just back in to the SEC tourney because they are taking 10 teams this year.

To get an at large bid we'd have to be at least a top 6 SEC team and that is still possible, might be unrealistic, but it's possible, we need to win 6 out of the next 8 games.

After looking over the projections, he's got 9 SEC teams in there. That doesn't seem realistic or does it? Has the SEC gotten that many teams in the past? I'm surprised that Auburn and Tennessee are there at this stage...just makes tonight and this weekend even bigger.

It's been discussed basically every year in recent memory. Its always been a sort of given that if you make the conference tournament and don't have a terrible non conference resume, you're automatically in, as long as you're above .500 overall. That obviously changes with 10 teams in. But often the #9 team has a very good shot at making a regional, even with no chance to prove their worth the final weekend. This year they have an opportunity to prove they belong.

I don't know if we have actually ever gotten 9 in, but I think we have gotten the 9th team in before. Not positive, but I think it has happened.

Thanks, makes sense I guess. I've been planning to go back through the last few years and take a look, work got in the way today.

Baseball America posted their stock report today as well. They have us and Vandy out, also giving 9 bids to the conference. BA holds huge value in winning weekends, and the committee has started to lean on that more the past couple years.

"MSU's best series win came against Vandy, while Tennessee has won just one series against a team inside the top 100 (Seton Hall). This weekend's series between the Volunteers and Bulldogs is huge, but it's in Starkville, and the Bulldogs have a bit more talent, so we'll give MSU the edge." - Aaron Fitt.

I'm scared because both PG and BA have Vandy out. I think they are about to get a lot better with Pecoraro returning to the rotation. He apparently looked very good in his outing Friday against Auburn. If Vandy gets things corrected, we are in a significantly different situation.

I agree about Vandy, to an extent...we've all been waiting for them to "turn it around"...still if we can win the next two series, which is a big "if", I know...it becomes math to a degree.
