After some early camp struggles, it looks like Keller Chryst has settled in a little bit at quarterback. He wasn’t lighting it up during the open portion of today’s practice, but he’s looked more consistent the last couple practices after a somewhat rough start to camp. He and Guarantano are more even now than when they started, at least from what we’ve gotten to see
I had some reservations after the first couple days about how much I thought Jonathan Kongbo was going to contribute this season, but he’s consistently looked better each practice. I think he’s sneaking his way into a starting role as one of the Vols’ two outside linebackers. A guy to keep an eye on will be Jordan Allen.
Multiple linemen have been getting reps at different positions, and the coaches are trying to figure out which players are their best five linemen to start. They want the five best linemen on the field, and they want to play the sixth and seventh best guys at that unit in the rotation.
Alexis Johnson is going to play a lot on the defensive line, someway somehow.
Nathanael RutherfordTuttle, Phillips, and Johnson are the Vols’ three best defensive linemen right now.
...but freshman Kingston Harris was drew the worst of Rocker’s wrath. Harris was sent off the field three different times for his effort, with Rocker making Harris do extra conditioning three different times.
Shy Tuttle got some work at strong-side defensive end, with Emmitt Gooden at the nose and Alexis Johnson at defensive tackle.
As has been the case in the last week, Dominick Wood-Anderson routinely took the first rep with the unit.
Allen has emerged as a factor at OLB, but Rumph is still riding the first-year player hard early in fall camp and on Tuesday, he made Allen redo a pass rush drill twice because he didn't like his fundamentals.
The wideouts were up and down again Tuesday during routes on air. Marquez Callaway, Jauan Jennings and Maleik Gray all had multiple drops. Jordan Murphy made a couple fine grabs, though, and Tyler Byrd was impressive both catching the football and showing acceleration after the reception. Overall, both Jarrett Guarantano and Keller Chryst threw the ball pretty well.
Quart’e Sapp and Daniel Bituli are leading the way there, but Darrin Kirkland Jr. is quickly reasserting himself with the group.
Jesse Simontonthe pecking order for reps — no matter the drill — remains the same: Tim Jordan, Ty Chandler, Trey Coleman, Madre London, Princeton Fant and Jeremy Banks.
Tyler Byrd had a pass on a corner route go through his hands when he could have made the play, Marquez Callaway had a bad drop on a slant and converted defensive back Maleik Gray was having a nice day catching the ball until dropping one a few reps after Callaway. Brandon Johnson on an out route had a pass behind him go off his fingertips. That ball hitting the ground might have been on the quarterback, but David Johnson didn't see it that way. The receivers coach barked at Johnson from across the field to tell him it's a pass he should have caught. Callaway and Johnson both came back after those reps to atone for those drops.
The first group on the offensive line on Tuesday was unchanged with Drew Richmond working at left tackle, Ryan Johnson at left guard, Brandon Kennedy at center, Riley Locklear at right guard and Marcus Tatum at right tackle. Trey Smith continues to be held out of any contact work, and the Vols are managing Chance Hall along as well.
Tennessee appears to be giving an extended look at junior-college transfer cornerback Kenneth George Jr. After the late find and addition to the 2018 class got some first-team work during Sunday's open practice, he was one of the first cornerbacks going through drills alongside Baylen Buchanan and Alontae Taylor on Tuesday.
Patrick BrownFreshman Bryce Thompson continues to stand out just from an athleticism standpoint, especially when leaping to high-point the ball when the defensive backs work on tracking passes in the air.
