Tennessee’s defensive backs spent a full period working on their pattern-matching scheme and calls for WVU’s explosive aerial attack. No specifics on the design or play stuff here, but the personnel was notable: Darrin Kirkland Jr. and Quart’e Sapp rotated at linebacker — which coincides with what we’ve also noted about Daniel Bituli sliding to BUCK linebacker in DIME situations. The DBs on the field included three freshman Alontae Taylor and Bryce Thompson on the outside and Trevon Flowers at safety. Micah Abernathy and Baylen Buchanan inside.

During one rep by Jonathan Kongbo, Chris Rumph screamed, “I like it!”

Tennessee's receivers had a nice start to game week with very minimal drops, as they took passes primarily from Jarrett Guarantano (who took the first rep each time) and Kellar Chryst.

During OL work, Jahmir Johnson was at LG.

Brandon Kennedy was working with the S&C staff during the open periods

Jarrett Guarantano throws a much prettier deep ball this year than he did last year. Granted, he did what he did in practice today without any pressure in his face and without his receivers being covered, but he hit Josh Palmer in stride on a beautiful deep pass during routes vs. air today.

Cedric Tillman could develop into a potent deep threat for the Vols down the line.

Darrin Kirkland Jr. and Jauan Jennings both looked active today, and both were participating fully in the drills we got to see during the open portion of practice.

Austin Johnson continues to look more and more improved this fall.

It doesn’t surprise me at all that Jahmir Johnson is fighting really hard for a starting spot for UT on the offensive line.

Jahmir Johnson continues to get extensive work at left guard and it's a very real possibility he starts there on Saturday.

Brandon Kennedy continues to do work on the side when we are at practice, but he rejoins the offensive line as they go do some team stuff as we are exiting. Ryan Johnson is getting some work at center while also repping at guard during individual drills.

Chance Hall continues to work at guard.

We saw eight wide receivers go through routes-on-air with the quarterbacks: Marquez Callaway, Josh Palmer, Jauan Jennings, Brandon Johnson, Jordan Murphy, Cedric Tillman, Tyler Byrd and walk-on Malik Elion. If you'll remember, Elion got a jet sweep shovel pass against LSU last season. He's a sprinter on Tennessee's track team and walked on to the football team last year.

It looked like Darrin Kirkland Jr. and Quart'e Sapp both were getting looks as the dime linebacker. That package could include three freshmen at times with Trevon Flowers — we've mentioned a few times how Flowers was in the conversation to be the sixth defensive back — and Bryce Thompson getting plenty of work. Kenneth George Jr. was spotted in a noncontact jersey.
