Vols Practice Thread #19

We've obviously heard little about our DB's. What kind of coverage will we play against WV? Zone or M to M??
My guess is Man.

Pruitt likes to play man on the outside in press coverage. But, I’m not sure UT has the corners with the ability to cover them. If he tries it early in they game they could certainly hit big plays, and UT could get behind which is the last thing they need.

Does Tennessee have an edge rusher this year?

Or will they just collapse the pocket?

Certainly, that is one of the keys to being better on defense this season that and stopping the run.

I think Taylor is getting double digits sacks, this year. I like the JUCO, Allen, too. But, apparently Kongbo is supposed to give us some of that too

We certainly have the guys for us to play a press zone in the secondary. Sometimes disguised as man to man. Which is what I think Pruitt will do. He is going to try and force Grier to throw the ball into double and triple coverage (by making him think it's actually man to man coverage when it's actually some type of zone). I would assume WV will motion a guy to see if the secondary moves with the motion as well, wonder what Pruitt will have our D do at that point.

In terms of experience we do NOT have the same level of ability that WVU has they are returning 2 WR’s one of which is an Preseason All-American. We know WVU is very talented and experienced at WR.

UT is replacing 2 starters from last season at both CB positions. One is true freshman who didn’t play CB in high school, the other is in his third season at UT and while he did play as a freshman, he rarely played last season.

Both do have potential but are UNKNOWN and UNPROVEN especially against top competition.

I would hesitate to leave our CB’s out on an “island” with these WR’s.

I suppose you missed the fact that it would be a press zone. Meaning they wouldn't just be on an "island" it's like baiting the QB before the throw. QB thinks it is just man to man coverage and doesn't see the zone portion of it. Pruitt will want Grier to throw but he wants him to be pressured so that he has to make quick decisions and errant throws.

Edit: A good example of this I believe is the Alontae Taylor pick in practice can't remember if it was 11 v 11 but that's what I think it was in. Taylor ended up being in a press zone coverage and JG didn't see him or expect him to be able to jump as high as he did. (Taylor may not have played CB in High School but that doesn't mean he doesn't have playmaking ability)

Press Zone??

Yea, I obviously don’t understand your terms. Maybe, you could help me.

Corners walk up as if they are in man to man "Pressing the receivers at the line" while they are actually playing zone once the receivers release. I don't understand how those are hard terms to understand?

Edit: Can be known as Cover 1 Press (Usually man to man), Cover 2 Press, Cover 3 Press or Cover 4 Press

How about you check this out.

Pressing is a technique, not a zone coverage. It's used in man coverage with the CB's on the outside. Cover 1 is one deep safety for help, Cover 2 is two deep safeties. I have a good understanding for defensive football as I played DB in high school. I have never heard the term "press zone" none of my coaches ever used it. We usually played Cover 2 with two deep safeties back splitting the field. The corners would press at the line of scrimmage at times or they would back off and simply cover the flat releasing anyone to the safety up top. We also played Cover 3 against run heavy teams to put a safety in the box. Cover 1 was used to play man on the outside with one safety deep. Cover 0 was true man to man coverage with no one deep.

I hope this helps.

We’re running a zone blitz scheme similar to what the Steelers run. A lot of cover two and cover three will be in effect

It's funny because essentially that's what I said without all those details. Obviously I stated we would be running a zone coverage most of the time not true man to man and adding "zone press" is stating that the CBs will be pressing at the line. I believe this is a failed attempt at you trying to make me look dumb which is funny.

You aren't the only one who played football and I was also a DB in HS and College.

Edit: Also to bring back the pertinent portion of this conversation, you stated we didn't have the talent for our DBs to be on an "Island" my comments are to ensure you that Pruitt most likely won't play man to man leaving them on an island (atleast not a lot) but will run Zone coverages with the DB pressing giving a Man to Man look before the snap. Thanks for the time wasted.

Here's an example. In this one it is a 2-Man, which means they are in Man to Man however at anytime they could turn this into a true Cover 2 and just give this press man look.

What makes you get the impression of this coming to fruition? And who are the “they” you speak of?
One of the things that stoked my confidence level this off season. Where is all that attrition the talking heads promised, as if guys were going to be leaving in droves.
We've lost Dormady, Q. Piquo and I'll throw K.McKenzie on that list. We've got K. Cryst, M. London, B. Kennedy. So I like what we've gained better than what we have lost and this is when it was supposed ts be bad.

This is a combo coverage which is man to man outside in bump and run to stop quick short pass routes, such as screens, slants, and curls in the flats. The two deep safeties are to help the CB's overtop in case the WR gets past them. I wouldn't call this Press Zone coverage. I would call it Cover 2 with man on the outside pressing or bump and run. It also looks like the CB is playing inside shoulder which means he's trying to cover the slant or seam route.

The problem with this scheme is a the defense doesn't have an unblocked safety in the box to stop the run. WVU will likely be able to run the ball on UT if they recognize this coverage. UT's players will have to be able to match up with WVU and I'm not sure UT has the athletes to do it. I would be very careful with pressing WVU. I would certainly make them earn everything they get and try to limit big plays. That being said I think Pruitt will mix up his calls a lot and he wil gamble at times to get to the QB. UT's DL must be disruptive to stop the run and pressure the QB if they are to have a shot at winning.

TN has the athletes experience is the issue

Look I don't disagree with you, on this formation, but again you missed my point.... I said that that was a Cover 2-Man formation ...... However, that same formation could be turned into a true Cover 2 at the snap of the ball (Zone formation) with press to give the man to man look.

.

I stated that in a previous post regarding their experience, and until I see the athletes in a game, I’m not certain of them either.

Both athletic ability and experience are issues for me going into this game.

However, I am certain that our inexperienced guys are being coached by one of the best teachers in the game and by all reports they are buying in.
