Prior to the season beginning I looked over the schedule and figured a 9-3 season. That's still a possibility. I figured the Cal game was a tossup, Florida was a loss, plus one other conference loss. Before we got to October I relooked at the schedule and said that October could make or break the Vols and two game in November could be the same (Arkansas and Kentucky). The SEC is tougher than ever this season than ever before. There is more parity with a few exceptions. We can't say that Florida, UGA and UT are the best of the East (but overall they are) and who are the best 2-3 teams in the West (LSU, Auburn, Bama-who knows).
However, if our Vols do win out, what are the possibilites for Bowl games? I think the Vols could still be in the top 15 teams in the country and get one of the top 10 bowls in the country.
I know lots of Vol fans aren't satisfied with just a 9 win season. Well, look at the schedule each year and make reasonable decisions. I know the Vols have one of the top 8 toughest schedules in the country. We have to learn to beat the Gators or have someone else in the conference to do it for us before we win the SEC East. UGA and the Gators are the teams to beat in the East. Also we have Bama and Ole Miss in the West every year, plus we alternate with Auburn, Arkansas, Miss. St, LSU. Any given year in the West there are at least 3 teams that could win the West and the same goes for the East.
A lot of schools would love to have 9 win seasons some would like 8 wins. I prefer 9 wins or more from the consistency of our team. It takes "good players" giving their all and of course a good coaching staff. While there could be changes made, who else would you want over Phil Fulmer that has been competitive and probably could be around 10 years or so?
GO VOLS!

I'm all for optimism, but as poorly as we are playing on defense, I don't think you can even let yourself daydream about running the table. Every game against even a marginal opponent is going to be a battle until we figure out how to at least slow down a decent offense.

I can think of only one opponent we have left that I am CERTAIN we will beat.

Win out? We have one sure win left on our schedule...UL-Lafayette. All of our remaining SEC games are toss-ups at best.

They won't.

But if they did, they would finish second to UF or treat us to another thumping by Auburn, Bama, or LSU in Atlanta.

While I agree to a point, I'm hoping we can pull off all the home games. I know that only La-Lafayette and possibly Vandy are the only winnable games. I figured that there was only 2 possible wins when I relooked at the schedule after the end of September.

We'll be 7-5

USC-Smelley and Mitchell aren't great, but Spurrier always beats UT

ULL- We should score 70, no joke

Arky-Dick is terrible and while McFadden and Jones are good they have no other real weapons. We'll show up for this game and Neyland will be rocking as we win

Vandy-Vandy has had their moments playing UGA to the last play before losing then winning today. I wouldn't put it past them to pull it off, but I'll say we'll win

Kentucky-All good streaks must come to an end, and this year at Commonwealth the Cats will look good. This will be a repeat of the 4 or 5 year span in the mid to late 90's when we scored in the 50's on them, except they'll be the ones putting up the numbers

Edit:Woodson throws for 700 yards and Rafael Little rushes for 200 as Randy Sanders can be seen laughing from the press box as the final seconds run off as UK runs up the score
We'll go to the Music City Bowl

I can't even think about winning out right now. That seems so far fetched that my imaginary dog won't even run after it.

i really wouldn't go THAT far...you guys freak out after a couple of losses...but my prediction is a 8-4 season.

I've been following Tenn FB for almost 30 yrs. A "couple of losses" doesn't freak me out. Considering our 4 remaining SEC games, we could just as easily lose all 4 as we could win all 4. I don't think either one will happen, but losing them is not outside the realm of possibility.

1) Couple of losses? A$$ beatings by Cal, UFl, and Bama.

2) We've beat the following cupcakes: Southern Miss, MSU, and Arky State and overrated Georgia (although I'll take take it everytime).

Besides it isn't the losses that scares us, it's the fashion of the losses and the depth of the schedule that remains. We'll definitely lose two more.

I agree, Tacoma. If we were bringing our "A" game and simply losing to a better team, that would be one thing. But that hasn't been happening. Playing badly and losing badly in games in which we should have been competitive is a running theme not just in this but in the last few seasons.

Are you freaking kidding!!! How can you sanely think that UT has even the most remote chance of winning out? Saban just exposed a huge weakness with our defense in the form of pass defense. Do you not think that every opponent from here on out isn't going to exploit this weakness? Chavis had an entire game to adjust, substitute players, etc. to stop the passing attack and had no answer. We don't have a very good defensive line to put pressure on the QB, we have freshmen DB's, we have a safety who is out of position on every play, and we have a linebacker who probably couldn't even start for SMU. USC, KY even AK will pass almost every play against us and be successful doing it. Combine all of this with the fact that we have a bunch of players who will give up if the team is behind and a coaching staff who still believes that strategies that worked 15 years ago will still work as long as there is execution.

Chavis isn't going to find a solution for the lack of a pass defense in one week. I am truly impressed by your determined optimism, but even mentioning that UT has a chance of winning out is simply ludicrous.

Maybe we can rely on good ole history and our record in November under Fulmer to be on our side. It might just scare those teams away. HAR HAR HAR

How can we win out when we could not win into a better front half of the season. We are 4-3 Would be nice to go 3-2 There is one more cupcake on the schedule. that is it. This is not the Vols of the past years nor is it the SCs, ARs, KYs, Vandys or the past.

Winning out ain't goonna happen.

Set your sights on 7-5...hope for a bowl against a team with no passing game, and no pass defense. Then we have a shot.

I respect your post and opinions TENNFAN but the problems I have
1.One of our wins,MTSU easily defeated (ASU) yesterday.
2.Vandy beat SC there,
3.Tennessee's losses have not been close
4.Arkansas, we play the best runner in the country Macfadden, a Heisman candidate, I don't see us stopping him.
5.Kentucky,psychologically we have a chance to beat them
6.SC will be a high scoring game that we have a shot at winning but Spurrier has that psychological advantage over Fulmer.
