And of that, KU determined they needed only 2 attempts (for 6 yards) from the QB.

He has shown he can be part of a winning team, I doubt anyone would claim he has gone out and snatched a victory with his own play. That's the definition of a qb. If he cant do that then he is not a qb. Why I feel Chryst is the guy when it's all said and done. Hes shown that he can win at a p5 level. He wont be great but I think he makes better decisions than jg.
So after finally having enough of Butch Jones and his lackluster, soft, and all too predictable version of the spread, UT is finally ready to get back to doing what made it great: running the ball downhill and through people. West Virginia's 3-3-5 defense is not built to stop power running teams, and their nose tackle and mlb aren't good enough to cover up that flaw. UT should be able to use extra blockers (te, fb, extra ot) in the backfield and on the same side of the line to take advantage of a scheme that primarily faces spread offenses in the pass happy Big 12. I think bubble screens will also help keep the defense honest and prevent stacking the box too much. The WR/TE slot seams will be open, especially if lined up in a trips or bunch formation. It's the same old story, use the run to set up play action, chew clock, give the defense time to rest, and it'll be a good day. I think we run a lot of iso up the middle, counters, traps that let a guard pull, and generally try to get upfield fast and wear them down. Our best chance running is to avoid plays to the outside and avoid slow developing, lateral moving Butch Jonesesque plays. Run it at em with a lead blocker and this defense will know what's coming but be unable to stop it. Controlling the clock is key. Think how many games we could have won if we could have milked the clock instead of running hurry up 3 and outs. I think our defense holds its own as long as they're not on the field too much. Hopefully Pruitt has more common sense than Jones, and will show it during the game. By getting rid of gamecharts, weird wr stances, odd clock management, and slow developing runs, Pruitt could return this offense back into a respectable unit and the Mountaineers defense will crumble even more than usual.
WV will load the box until the Vols can show they can move the chains throwing the football, let's just hope we can hit some pass plays to open the running game or it could get ugly early
Fingers crossed that this is not the case, however
Go Vols
WVU is going to be a different team on defense than it was a year ago. Stopping the run might not be their weakness in 2018.
The Mountaineers are very high on their DL. They lost two starters to transfer (Shuler and McDougle) but added Kenny Bigelow from USC and Jabril Robinson from Clemson. Behind the scenes WVU thinks its better off without Shuler and McDougle because one was lazy and the other selfish.
They (WVU) feels the DL was transformed from a weakness to a strength because of the new additions including man-child and the best recruit to come out of WV since Sam Huff... Dante Stills. Dante was ready to step in from day 1. He has the size, strength and speed to be force. He's nearly 300 lbs but runs like a 235 lb linebacker. WVU plans to use him, at least in his frosh year, as a pass rush specialist on 3rd down.
Bigelow was a 5* recruit who has underperformed due to injury but is healthy for the fist time in his college career. Robinson was simply behind the numbers at Clemson. The Clemson people say he would have started anywhere else. both have come in and been leaders.
WVU is equally set at LB...
If I was scheming against WVU I would pick on their CBs. Derrick Pitts is another home grown product who picked WVU over Penn State and a host of others. It's his first year starting at QB after redshirting last year. At LCB is Hakeem Bailey. Bailey started last year, lost his job, then regained it near the end of the season. Bailey has talent but was a "deer in the headlights" in his first year in the program.
In my opinion if WVU's new DL is as stout as its been reported to be in fall camp then the best bet is to pick on the r-frosh RCB and see if Bailey is ready for the pressure to play LCB when it counts. WVU's 3-3-5 - to work well, requires the CBs to play on an island... If WVU can play single coverage they use the safeties to flex the defense into many fronts including a 4-2 or other bear looks. If the Vols can beat single coverage and get the ball to the receivers then they force WVU into being less aggressive than they like.
One final thought on WVU's defense. The best player in a Mountaineer uniform is FS Kenny Robinson. Robinson hits like a LB but has the coverage skills of a shutdown corner. Robinson started at CB last year as a true freshman. Robinson played in only 10 games but had 46 tackles, 32 of them solo, 2 sacks and 3 interceptions with 2 TDs off those interceptions.
Our team needs to watch film of the 2006 Cal game. We had just come off an embarrassing losing season. Cal came in ranked #9 if I recall. They left with many bruises and few points as we beat them like the government mules they were.
- Regardless of how good he is...there is no question that Will Grier is the best player in a Mountaineer uniform. Robinson may well be the best defensive player that WVU has, but if your safety is making most of your tackles...it means the other team is moving the ball on you pretty well.WVU is going to be a different team on defense than it was a year ago. Stopping the run might not be their weakness in 2018. - I'm sure it has been an area of focus for them...still, stopping the run may be difficult in the opener. WVU may be better on run defense...but I believe UT will be significantly better on run offense than last year, as well.

WVU plans to use him, at least in his frosh year, as a pass rush specialist on 3rd down. - Freshmen pass rushers have had some success over the years...I like our chances if he is lined up against Trey Smith. I agree that WVU's defense should look significantly different than last year...since you run a 3 man front, and have brought in a high level recruit and two grad transfers.
Bigelow was a 5* recruit who has underperformed due to injury but is healthy for the fist time in his college career. Robinson was simply behind the numbers at Clemson. The Clemson people say he would have started anywhere else. both have come in and been leaders. - Transfers can immediately bring in talent and leadership...UT is hoping that bringing Brandon Kennedy from Alabama at Center will do the same.
WVU is equally set at LB... - Is Benton going to start at SAM? He is listed at 213, which seems a little light for the position. Tonkerly at 222, is a bit better for the MIKE, as is Tonkerly at the WILL. Size-wise, that would appear to be very well suited for pass protection, but a running team with a big FB/HB could create some issues. I would say that WVU's linebackers are a bit too small for a heavy run oriented team, and UT's LBs are a bit heavy to be effective in Pass Protection.

He has a significant size advantage over your linebackers (height and weight), and could prove hard to bring down.
