A spectator at Monday's Knoxville Quarterback Club meeting didn't ask the question to Tennessee defensive backs coach Willie Martinez in jest:

"Have you ever considered playing (sophomore wide receiver) Jauan Jennings on defense?"

A one-word answer followed.

"Yes," Martinez said, generating some applause from the crowd at Calhoun's on the River.

Martinez then continued: "It always comes up. He's one of our best special teams players, but we're always concerned about injury and wearing him out."

"It all comes down to injuries," Martinez said. "There are a handful of other guys like that as well. If Jauan goes down, you take that chance of not having him.

"But yes, it has been in discussions."

Jennings reminds me of another player that wore #15. Carl Pickens, probably the best athlete to ever wear the orange. He played both ways in the 90's and Jennings could definitely do the same. This guy is a Beast!

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't want to see him get a tin defensive snaps, but in certain situations, yeah I could see it.

Carl Pickens (All-pro NFL WR) played defense in the 1990 Cotton Bowl with most of his snaps coming on offense as a WR. He saved the game with an interception in the back of the end-zone. Ironically, he also wore "15".

Sometimes a player is so good, you can't afford to keep him off the field.

Something must be done to improve the secondary and perhaps Byrd could help?

I agree that we need help in the secondary but the coaches seem to think that Byrd and JJ are needed more at WR than on defence. Since the coaches get to see them in practice everyday,I'll go with what they say.

Pickens played both ways in '89 season and '90 cotton bowl. Played only WR in 90 and 91
