Vols Film Study: Malone Comes Up Clutch

This can't be right--it reads as though DeBorg is scheming to our advantage. He ain't that smart.

It sure is nice to see the players I've watched from their recruitment start to come into form and go down in TN history as playmakers.

Malone has a high ceiling, probably higher than M. North. Let's hope #3 has a career day against the gators. My wish is he scores the go ahead TD to put the game away late in the 4th

4 verticals every team has in playbook. It's beyond uninformed if Fox thinks DeBord is doing anything special.

So one year an OC comes in, takes an Oline that was the worst in UT history and makes them above avg and wisely schemes around them to lead us to our 2nd best rushing season in UT history. The overwhelming majority on VN are very happy with the hire and think Debord done an amazing job in 1 off season.

One year later:
Debord is the worst OC we've ever had. Plays are so predictable and the Oline is putrid and Butch just hired his buddy. Not even a good high school OC. The overwhelming majority of VN thinks he should be fired (or assassinated) cause he is the main reason this team has looked so horrible.

Amazing how much can change in 8 months. I've always been told things are never as good or as bad as they appear. I don't think he was quite as great as most felt after last season but I also think if the players execute the plays as we know they could instead of sloppy with a bunch of penaltys and fumbles that our offense would still have looked pretty good these 1st 3 games.

With the talent on this team Debo shouldn't have had to open up the playbook vs the inferior teams we played and therefore we should have looked bland. Otoh, it's on him to make sure these players play clean and up to their talent and they didn't.

Let's see what he does with the Oline, Dobbs, and Malone vs UF and that will tell the tale cause that's gonna be a helluva challenge for any OC given how bad the matchup is with UF's strength against our weakness.

North wasn't in Malone's stratosphere as far as "ceiling" is concerned IMO. He couldn't get off the LOS, and couldn't get behind anybody, ever. He made about 3 outstanding catches as a freshman and trailed off from there.

Malone is much more athletic, just had to get through some maturity issues and an injury or two. We saw the flashes last year and now we're seeing him fully come into his own. Sky's the limit for him if he keeps progressing as he has since last year.
