Vols DC Shoop and his primary interests of the secondary

I know there's a lot of talent in the secondary but Is anyone else scratching their head when they talk like Moseley is gonna be the other starting corner?

Moseley keeps improving over time. There's plenty of competition there so I am not worried.

Shoop still is working on that as he looks to improve a unit that ranked No. 36 in the nation in total defense and No. 47 against the pass last season.

We ranked #80 in pass defense against winning FBS programs last year (7 games). Penn State ranked #16 (also 7 games). While stats don't always tell the whole story I'm very much supportive of the extra attention CBS is giving our secondary.

I remember in 2011 when we had trouble running the ball in our opener - it was a harbinger for an issue that would remain all season. Last year BGSU lit up our secondary like no one else in our season opener. This vulnerability would be exposed throughout the season. Every single one of Florida's 5 4th down conversions were by completed passes. OU came back to tie the game on back to back passing TDs in the 4th quarter. Bama completed 2/2 passes for 44 yards in their go ahead drive against us. Hopefully we'll be able to make this more difficult for our opponents this year.

Gotta admit I expected Justin Martin to be a lock but players progress at different speeds and Moseley has shown a lot of ability up to this point. It may be that working with Shoop has finally caused it to "click" for him.

Dline improvement will assist with that. How many times did we miss the sack or only rush 3 on those key plays?

The offense will keep putting points on the board.

I expect there will be more attempts against us on 4th down this year due to teams getting desperate early.

Moseley has always practiced well.

And honestly i believe its because our passing game is average.

He has good ability. He got burnt against UGA and Bowling Green pretty badly, but he improved as the year went on.

Of course the air attacks we faced weren't exactly Hal Mum air raid either...

Any single reason why we were so bad against the pass?

I'm going with Jancek which means now that we have Shoop - the problem is likely corrected. Seriously, we weren't putting any pressure on Grier at all on 4th down? Really? How much time do you want to give him? At least try to force him to make a bad decision or get rid of the ball in a hurry. Right?

Abernathy putting in the work!

I still believe Warrior takes that spot eventually.

But I honestly didnt see Micah being a factor, much less starting.

The best line in that article:

Tennessee coach Butch Jones hired Bob Shoop and, according to Shoop, “just said do whatever you need to do.”

The Vols tackling in the secondary must improve as well as pass coverage, but Shoop has the tools to complete the task and then some.:salute:

Has Martin really fell behind a true freshman at this point or is this guy just throwing darts blindfolded?

I go by what happens during the game. I could care less about practice warriors. And as of right now I'm skeptical of any praise regarding Moseley.

He was DREADFUL last year during actual games. While Martin was great.

I'll be shocked if Butch and the staff are dumb enough to trot out Moseley ahead of Martin after his disasterous 2015 season.
