Vols=Closed practice ND=Open practice

Most people on the board disagree, but I am right there with you. I always go back to the 2005 debacle to prove my point. If practices were open back then, based on the product I saw on Saturdays, at least Vol fans would have had fair warning.

On a side note, Pete Carroll also has a very open attitude toward practices.

To me it is the most outward expression of CPF's distrust of everyone right now. That opinion will be widely frowned upon, but that is the way I see it. It is just another rock to crawl under.

Accountability....even to the Knoxville media drones...is not always a bad thing.

Yeah, but let's not pretend that this is just a CPF thing. A lot of coaches close practice.

I'm from the Nick Saban/Bill Belichick/Bill Parcells school. I don't go into the kitchen to watch the cook prepare my dinner. Therefore, nobody has any business invading their practices.

I can see this issue both ways, but I've never understood why people feel like they have a right to see practices.

Mark Richt had some interesting comments on this issue a couple of days ago:

Richt knows information flows from practices | ajc.com

That is the most consistent response to my objections toward closing practice. If I remember correctly Saban otherwise known as "the most honest coach in the universe" was the first to close in the SEC. This is a relatively new phenomenon.

Were I a fan of other schools I would voice the same objections.

Like I said, I can see the issue from a fan's perspective, but if I were a coach, I'd close practice in a heartbeat. There is a enough scrutiny without having every single drill analyzed . . . not to mention information getting to opponents.

Understood. I don't know that I would want to open the gates for everybody, but would be all in favor of allowing the local media to watch.

I would be more receptive to letting fans watch practice than I would be to allowing the media cretons to further invade my workspace.

Part of my issue with this is that you can watch game film from 1999 and know what UT is going to do tomorrow.

My thoughts exactly. I'd be a lot more willing to let fans watch practice than some yutz sports anchor.

To some degree you are right about that . . . but a lot of player tendencies can be picked up that opponents would never know about if they didn't see practice like where pass rushers like to go, which corners recover well and which ones like to peek into the backfield etc, etc.

Point taken, and understood...hence my willingess to restrict viewership to those with press passes. We have already covered this though.

All of my opinions about closed practice are based on the load of crap fed to us by the coaching staff in 05.

The fact is, watching on a Saturday tells a fan or an opposing coach all they need to know about tendencies and talent. I give! Uncle! Uncle! Uncle!

I could be wrong, but wasn't 2005 the year we let ESPN air one of our practices?
