Vols biggest upset in program history?

This one was great! I went to that game and will never forget how the Miami fans were so arrogant to all of us vols. I bought a button before the game that said Vinny Who? , and caught a lot of loud mouthed comments, but after that beat down, the same Miami fans in the hotel doing the talking literally avoided me. It was Great!!!

I experienced the same.

Was HBC SOS's final home game.

Spurrier couldn't stomach a final loss to the Vols, so he just quit the week before the game. Left his seniors and team high and dry. Lost a lot of respect for him after that. Real chickens*t move.

You are 95% correct. Like you I lost respect for him. If we could go back and review my posts in the old Gatorsports msg board you will see me eviscerating him. He QUIT pure and simple. Phucked UF in recruiting too. He quit unannounced with less than one month to signing day. Losing to UT wasn't his reason. He did so because the AD, Foley would not back him against claims that FSU intentionally injured UF players the game before and you are right UT was figuring him out as was several rivals. He knew his run was over. Darnell Docket tried to stomp on Grossman's hand and injured Earnest Graham's knee. All caught on tape. Clear as day to even Gator Haters. Not having Graham for UT probably cost UF the UT game. I've only recently forgiven SOS for quiting. He believes the FSU criminals cost him a shot at the NC. Even without Graham UF was a 17 point favorite over UT. As you know UT won by two points after hanging on a thread as a life line at the last few seconds.

SOS quit on UCe. When the going gets tough SOS quits. How could anyone conclude different?

In 1959 when Tennessee beat # 1 ranked LSU in Knoxville. Billy. Canon was stopped on a 2 point conversion try to give the VOLs a 14 to 13 win.
Yep, doesn't get much better than beating the undefeated, defending NCs, #1 ranked team with the longest winning streak and the Heisman Trophy winner. Coming up on November 7, the 60th anniversary. I was there sitting in Section A and Cannon was stopped short. Close but he didn't make it!

View attachment 228219My dad used to talk about that game all the time. This was the week after Cannon's famous Halloween Night punt return to beat Ole Miss. Before I was born, my parents would tune in the radio to Tennessee games in the afternoon and LSU games at night. Because of that I have a soft spot for LSU, so long as they're not playing the Vols.
See my post above, I was there.

oh, so we didn't beat Florida straight up, they had to be injured. The Vols physically destroyed that team. No one player would have prevented it.

Miami 2003 gets my vote.

Agree with most of the games mentioned for sure but I think UT beating Ohio St with Eddie George coming off a Heisman win in the 96 Citrus Bowl gets overlooked.

Both teams were top 5 so it doesn't qualify as an uspet but I dont think the talking heads gave the Vols much of a shot until Bill Duff planted George at the goal line.

As I watched a few games today hoping for upsets it got me wondering about Vol history concerning upsets. What is the biggest upset that UT has ever pulled off in the history of the program?
I think we were 17-1/2-point underdogs to Florida in 2001. Anyone know what the point spread was for the '85 Sugar Bowl?

UT won straight up. I said that SOS believes that with Graham UF might have won.

However after reviewing my post I wasn't clear. My intent was to opine that SOS believed Graham's absence cost him the game. Flog me if you feel the need. Graham had no bearing on the UF defense's inability to contain Travis.

That's sort of my take on it. I did think the timing was suspicious as UT/USCe was next on the calendar for him, and I didn't think there was any way UT could have lost that one. I like Spurrier enough, but I thought it was bad for the team. I've sat in on a recruiting in home visit from a coach I'd rather not mention, and I know they want the parents of the recruits to know the coach is there for THEM.. It's better to lose a coach to getting fired than one that just quits. Hate it for his players.

Just to say one different: 2007 vs Georgia. We were unranked, they were no.12. And we destroyed them 35-14. They also finished ranked no. 2 in the country. This is another one of the big upsets, Fulmer doesn’t get much credit for. He certainly had plenty of faults, but he had a lot of upsets people seem to forget.

When they beat Penn State in the first night game at Neyland stadium.
When they beat #1 Auburn with Bo Jackson
The miracle at South Bend
The 85 Sugar Bowl against Miami
Beating Miami in 2001
Beating UCLA with the Cobb Webb combo
Watch the 89 game against Auburn if it’s on YouTube was another awesome performance
These are some of my favorites and biggest upsets that Tennessee pulled

Miami Sugar Bowl 86 . I was there, Miami fans were so arrogant about beating the Vols, but afterwards it was so much fun.
