It looks like he has emerged ahead of Lane Kiffin as the favorite to replace Tommy Bowden.

The Name Game: Muschamp Emerges as Leader at Clemson : Football Rumor Mill

Texas Longhorns defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is the current favorite to replace Tommy Bowden as head coach at Clemson University, sources tell FITS. A former standout defensive back at the University of Georgia, Muschamp has held defensive coaching positions at LSU, Auburn and Texas, among other college programs, and was the Miami Dolphins assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2005. In thirteen years as a coach, Muschamp has never remained at one school longer than four seasons. Known for his fiery sideline demeanor, Muschamp is easily one of the most talented defensive coaches in the college game, although he has never held a head coaching position at any level. In addition to his lack of head coaching experience, it is unclear whether or not Muschamp’s irascible personality would mesh well with Tigers’ athletic director Terry Don Phillips, who has a habit of stalking the sidelines (in purple sweater vests, no less) and second-guessing his head coaches. – fitsnews.com

I don't think Tennessee would even consider Muschamp. My bet is they want someone with head coach experience.

Couple of reasons to not get in a big hurry to go after Muschamp.

I want experience too, or I'd be pissed. However, his name has come up a lot so I thought I'd pass it along. The original source is FITSNews, and I have worked with them in the past, and they're good people.

yeah thats just it! No head coaching experience! Remember Wade Houston a Hotshot assistant at louisville. Yeah the one season we won 3 ballgames with his son an all american playing for him. Maybe Muschamp will work out but let Clemson take that gamble, he just might be the next Bob Stoops but at Tennessee we need Sure fire Guarantees

i have a feeling we won't have to worry about seeing it on our sidelines. we should be able to enjoy it from afar.

...in my mind Muschamp is being groomed as a replacement for Mack Brown when ever he decides to retire. Muschamp could wind up a head coach anywhere but unless it's a Georgia....Texas will have a string on him.
I think I would want someone dedicated to Tennessee than a "mover". He's a great X's and O's coach though.

Brown could be like Joe Pa and Beautiful Bobby, at Texas for a long time. I think he is proving himself. He has shown that it doesn't take him long to become a winner. Maybe he is just trying to show that he can be a head coach.... I may be totally wrong, but it couldn't be any worse than what we have now...

Texas will never make a guy with Muschamp's personality the face of their program.

I've heard that Auburn has already made plans to buy out Tuberville and his whole staff so they can bring in Muschamp and a new crew. take it for what it's worth

Do you really believe that we hired Houston because he could coach?

What the heck is a 'sure fire guarantee' in terms of a HFC?
