Michigan at #5 is a joke. I bet they go 8-4

Have you seen their schedule? 6 out of the 1st 7 are at home with their only road game at Rutgers during that span. By that time, if they've gelled, they could handle the other 4 games: Mich. State, Iowa, MD, and Indiana before the game with OSU.

I'm not saying their top 5 in talent but their schedule is very soft and I could see '06 repeating itself with both UM & OSU being undefeated going into the last game.

I see UM with 2 losses at most. They had talent just a bad coach 2 years ago. Harbaugh is a miracle worker and has brought in good classes. Oh and they finished the season by beating UF by a wider margin than any UT team since maybe 1990. Butch was afraid of UF's secondary (with a starter suspended) so he didn't throw anything. Harbaugh laughed at it and went deep on them multiple times.

An easy schedule doesn't make you a top 5 team imo. OSU will obliterate them again.

I agree with the others on the Michigan posts. I predict that Michigan will be undefeated going into their bye week, and their QB will be the Heisman front-runner (per usual) through Week 8.

Wk 1 - Hawaii
Wk 2 - UCF
Wk 3 - Colorado
Wk 4 - Penn State
Wk 5 - Wisconsin
Wk 6 - @ Rutgers
Wk 7 - Bye
Wk 8 - Illinois
Wk 9 - @ Mich St
Wk 10 - Maryland
Wk 11 - @ Iowa
Wk 12 - Indiana
Wk 13 - @ Ohio St

I seriously think they'll go 10-2. 9-3 would be a disappointment for them, given how easy their schedule is.

I agree but being highly ranked doesn't necessarily mean you're a good team. I can see them being undefeated going OSU. If they are, they'll be very, very highly ranked because they're Michigan.

It feels SO good to see us back where this program deserves to be.

but see...we're not yet.

we haven't done anything. we had a spring scrimmage and someone put a # by our name.

that's NOT an accomplishment!!!!:peace2:

This. They take advantage of an incredibly easy schedule. Sometimes I wish Tennessee played in the Big 10 where we could win 10+ games every year but it's better to play in a big boy conference.

i can't see them losing a home game. wiscy being the only one that would present a serious challenge this year.

@ iowa...they'll be solid, but i don't think they repeat the type of season they had last season.

so Michigan's season is down to two road games...@ MSU and @ OSU.

i think 10-2 is probably the floor for them.

You can do the same thing with our schedule. Where are our challenges? Bama and Ohio State are 1A and 1B. Michigan State is UGA, both looked good last year, both were easily defeated by Bama. We think UF is good but they got smacked down by FSU, Bama, and UM last year showing they weren't that good and they lose their starting QB and a lot on D. Texas A&M maybe? They lost their #1 $ #2 QBs and are using a damaged OU QB oh and their coach is a losing season away from being fired.

UM deserves their ranking as much as we do. Both teams should consider it a failure of a season with < 10 regular season wins

I don't get the optimism about MI except an easy schedule. For essentially an unknown, GA is getting a lot of preseason credit, too; GA really could be as good as some think or have a lot of first year problems. Athlon apparently passed on the GA hype train for the MI one.

Do pre-season polls attempt to predict how good a team is going to be or are they making an effort to predict how well a team is going to navigate it's schedule?

Every person voting in each poll does it his own way. They're given guidelines, but many aren't too fastidious about following them. So there's no single answer to your question, for the AP and Coaches' polls.

Most of the computer- and single-source ranking systems attempt to predict the year's outcome in advance. In other words, they're taking the schedule into account. They're trying to predict, now, how things will look in December.

ESPN's FPI and a few others ignore the schedule and attempt to discern purely how the teams stack up by strength. Because of that, they acknowledge that they're not going to be as good at predicting outcomes over the season as other systems might.
