It's sort of a tradition for me to offer this reminder at this time of year...

After you've applauded loudly those seniors who make their final pass through the "T" tomorrow.

After the Vols have taken Vandy to the woodshed once again as punishment for making a DVD to memorialize their one win against the Volunteers in 2005.

After you've tippled that last drop of Old No. 7 from your hip flask.

Make sure to stick around at the end and give yourself the treat of turning towards the Hill, Closing your eyes, and listening with pride as The Pride plays the Tennessee Waltz. It is as beautiful an ending to a home football season as there is in the game, and as a Volunteer, it is a moment you and those like you who love the Orange and White get the rare privilege of savoring.

And don't be embarassed when that tear materializes in the corner of your eye. That's what it's all about folks....

The Notes.

Just some random thoughts from around the SEC. Penned by TFP editor Darren Epps...
1. Georgia fans shouldn’t fear LSU.

Some UGA fans are trying to rationalize a possible missed opportunity to play in the SEC championship game by stating that the easier route to the Sugar Bowl wouldn’t involve LSU. True. But there’s little reason to believe that Georgia’s revived, balance offense couldn’t be effective against an LSU team that has allowed 135 points in its last five games. And isn’t the goal of the season to win an SEC championship?

2. Should Phillip Fulmer be coach of the year?

Mississippi State’s Sylvester Croom is your current leader, but consecutive losses to Arkansas and Ole Miss would certainly damage his case. Bobby Johnson should receive some votes if Vanderbilt qualifies for a bowl game, but the Commodores are running out of chances. Kentucky’s Rich Brooks would need to beat Georgia or Tennessee. What about the guy who saved his job and revived a breathless Tennessee team to potentially win the SEC? Talk about an unlikely candidate.

3. Intriguing potential bowl matchups.

Please, please, please give us Illinois-Florida in the Capital One Bowl, which is suddenly a very real possibility. If Ron Zook beats his former team, Urban Meyer will have the entire offseason to hear about that one. How about Tulsa-Arkansas in the Liberty, pitting former Razorbacks offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn against Houston Nutt? We could see the battle of UTs — Tennessee and Texas — in the Cotton. South Carolina in the Armed Forces Bowl, however, is not intriguing at all.

4. Vanderbilt can’t lose focus now.

What else are you going to watch, the nationally televised battle between Notre Dame (1-9) and Duke (1-9) at 2:30? Catch it on ESPN Classic the next day. The Rebels typically play well in big home games (Florida and Alabama come to mind this year) and had a week off to prepare for this rivalry. Ole Miss took LSU to overtime in a night game at Tiger Stadium last year and won’t be afraid of the nation’s No. 1 team.

5. Tim Tebow for Heisman?

His numbers are better than Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon’s in just about every single category. Of course, the Heisman is about much more than statistics. If Oregon stumbles, Tebow should be the leader.

Go Vols!!

and after last night's ORE game, i don't know who else would be up for the Heismen, esp if Tebow puts up big numbers in the last two games.

And why not apply this logic to a potential UT/LSU title game....

I'd love to get Texas in a bowl match-up, always wanted to see the BIG ORANGE get the chance to spank the burnt orange boys from Austin. I'd prefer it not be in the Cotton Bowl though.....last trip I made to the Cotton Bowl I watched us get drilled by K-State while freezing my ass off, not one of my better BIG ORANGE memories to say the least.

I enjoyed our last trip to the Cotton Bowl myself...We put the Aggies in the hurt locker...

I am hoping for the Sugar Bowl.. but the cotton bowl wouldnt be too bad. :) whichever bowl we end up in its important to play better than last year or the results will be the same.

because for some reason, the free world still thinks GA is in first place.

i love watching and listening to the prognosticators of late. they all are quick to say that GA is in 1st place, and they begin to talk about a potential GA/LSU game......and at the end, they follow all that up with the ever so condescending "of course, GA needs some help from Tennessee, because they control their destiny in the East", and that's it......on to the next story.

and i understand why......we have those 3 clunkers on our schedule, and no one has forgotten it......but at the same time, magically, everyone has forgotten 35-14 on 10-6-07.

To Whom it may concern:
Hello, We're the Tennessee Volunteers, and until further notice, we will be in 1st place in the SEC East, not the Georgia Bulldogs. We appreciate your enthusiasm for the race for the East, but please note, Tennessee did beat Georgia on October 6th 35-14. We understand how this oversight can happen, given that Georgia rarely ever beats Florida, we can certainly see why that would be reason enough to assume Georgia would be in 1st place. It should also be noted that Georgia also lost to South Carolina as well, and Tennessee beat both.

Thank you,
Vol Nation

P.S. it's not our responsibility that after Florida dismantled us, they went on to lose to LSU, Auburn and Georgia. We spotted Florida a two game lead. We had no part in them blowing that lead. for inquires about that, please refer those comments/questions to Lawgator1.

Go Vols.:salute:

I personally would like, however I know it's impossible, to see a Big 10 (being Michigan) and SEC (being Tennessee) in a year ending matchup. I am sure they are matched for other bowls should both happen to win out.

Man, gives me chills right now just thinking about it. You are so right. What a beautiful song. Last home game is always sad for me.

Thanks for reminding me, in the haste to beat traffic, I've not waited to hear it. I know it will get me in trouble, but I much prefer Tenn Waltz to Rocky Top as a song. I sing it every Monday night at a coffee shop in Bristol at a jam session. You are so right, it brings tears to my eyes every time I,ve heard the band play it that last home game.

QUOTE: because for some reason, the free world still thinks GA is in first place.

Could they be basing that assumption on the fact that GA's SEC record is 5-2, while UT's SEC record is 4-2?

:eek:k:

UT fans 'beat the UT drum.' GA fans 'beat the GA drum.'....and on and on and on. Why can't people realize that and get on with their lives?

I was there too and I'm shivering just thinking about it. However, I also went to see us drill the aggies. By the end of the 1st quarter most of the aggie fans had left our section and those still around were singing Rocky Top with us...

It is also the final home game for the leader of the Pride of the Southland. So the playing of the Waltz will be extra special for the band also.

the "hypesman" award show is getting worse each year, if tebow is the odds on favorite I have another good reason not to watch the show. the dixon kid is a hell of a player, sorry to see he and the ducks go down last night. he was my candidate.
