"California is a fine place to live—if you happen to be an orange."
-Fred Allen

Yes, oranges thrive in California sun. So if you happen to be a Big Orange, so much the better.

90% of media wonks who have expressed an opinion believe in the Bears.... 10% media accuracy sounds about right to me.

VolNotes would like to wish last year's UT beat writer from the TFP, Gentry Estes, the best of luck at his new writing gig for a paper in Mobile. We look forward to Wesley Rucker growing into his new UT beat...

TFP:Mayo/O-line/Parrish
It takes more than one broken pinkie to scare Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo, even if that pinkie is on the throwing hand of his team's starting quarterback.

"Whoever is playing quarterback, they are at Tennessee for a reason, and that's obviously because they're a good football player," Mayo said. "Whether it's Ainge or (Jonathan) Crompton or whoever out there, we've got their back.
"If it's a less experienced person, we'll just have to step it up even more."

Not much between first, second O-Lines...
Fulmer said in some cases, all that's standing between the first and second-team offensive line is a simple but unacceptable slip-up.

"They do really good, and then there's a mistake," Fulmer said. "If we just cut out those mistakes, they are physically as good if not better than the guys that are in front of them. It's very encouraging.
"Vladimir's a physical specimen. Jacques McClendon is a physical specimen. Ramone Johnson, physical specimen. They're very talented."

D-Line Top heavy...
Fulmer didn't sugarcoat anything with the defensive line. He said he's still only comfortable playing senior J.T. Mapu, juniors Demonte Bolden and Walter Fisher and sophomore Dan Williams.
"The fifth defensive tackle would be Chase Nelson right now, but Chase Nelson hasn't done well enough to be out there playing against a team like Cal yet. Or Victor Thomas," Fulmer said. "We'd have to have an injury or something. They're going to go on the trip, but they aren't there.
"They haven't earned their stripes. They haven't been consistent."

For Parrish, a long road meets a starting end...
It's taken Jarod Parrish five years to be listed at the top of a depth chart without someone else getting hurt, and he said Saturday will give him a feeling he hasn't felt in a while.
Considering he's made just two tackles in the past two years, Parrish may have more to prove than anyone on Tennessee's defense, and he's fully aware of that.

"It's one of the biggest games (of my career)," the former Chattooga High School star said. "I want to come out there and prove a point. Of course ... I want to prove that I should be starting."

GVX:Foster's Grandfather will get to see game in person
Arian Foster always gets a phone call from his grandpa after every Tennessee football game.
This week, he’ll get a hug.
Tennessee’s starting tailback will play in front of his grandfather, Carl Foster, who plans on making the six-hour drive from his home in Carson, Calif., to Berkeley for the Vols’ season-opener Saturday at No. 12 California.

“Very, very, very excited,” says Carl. “Just been preparing all week long to go. What it feels like to me is when you go to a surprise party and you don’t even know anything about it. You just almost feel like you want to cry because you’re so happy.”

“Once the game’s on, I’ve got nothing on my mind but the game,” Arian said. “You can’t help but notice, my grandpa’s in the stands and he’s never seen me play a football game before. Not any added pressure, but this is a moment I’d like to bask in.”
When asked how he would like to celebrate the occasion, Arian offers a low, soft laugh.
“Just to do well, man,” he says. “Just do well.”

I left PinkieGate out of VolNotes today. I'm just not worried about it.

Go Vols!!!

I can't believe he even said that after all the bad luck with injuries this year and every year.

Saw Jerod Mayo interview on "Inside The Orange" last night. That guy is easy to like, gave a great interview, speaks well and has an awesome personality. In fact most of the players represented themselves very well on camera. I like that.

Yeah, I've had the same reaction to Mayo's interviews. He seems like like a good guy.

I remember in years past seeing guys that looked so sheepish in front of a camera and couldn't construct a sentence. These guys seem much more prepared, Eric Berry also did well.

Well, you can watch James Banks and Carson Newman play UTC tonight at 7pm on Comcast CSS. That might do for a fix...
