VOL NAVY

No, you don't have to pay.

In 1962 former Vol broadcaster George Mooney found a quicker and more exciting way to get to Neyland Stadium other than fighting the notorious Knoxville traffic. Mooney navigated his little runabout down the Tennessee River to the stadium and spawned what would later become the "Volunteer Navy."

Today, approximately 200 boats of all shapes and sizes make up this giant floating tailgate party. Tennessee, Washington and Pittsburgh are the only institutions with stadia adjacent to bodies of water.

I wouldn't say they go "across" a river. But basically, yes.

It does not cost to dock your boat.

As long as you don't mind people walking on and through your boat to get somewhere.

I've been in the Vol Navy for two different games over the years. We rolled into Knoxville in an old houseboat on Friday night both times. The first boats to arrive tie onto the dock, and all the others just tie onto them and each other. On Saturday mornings, kids would come through the boats selling newpapers and one even offered to go get our breakfast (like at a McDonald's). I had a blast and would do it again if I had access to a boat.

You might also check with Volunteer Landing -- the Marina there rents slips by the day for a reasonable fee (a little higher on gamedays, of course). It's a nice way to go if you have a smaller boat and don't want people trampling all over it. I think it's about $1.50 a foot.

So basically, a bunch of boats go a cross a river to get to the stadium while drinking beer?

Some people travel from a very long ways away, going through the TVA locks in the dams to get to Knoxville. If you are ever at Neyland, look down at the River; you'll be quite impressed by some of the boats.

I did this once a few years back (1982, if that is a few, everything is relative you know) with a friend who had a large beautiful boat. I guess some would have called it a yacht, but I'm from the country, so it was a boat for me. We put in well west of Knoxville and spent the night on the boat. That morning we pulled into Knoxville and on to Neyland for the game. It was a wonderful experience until after the game. A couple of our Orange brethren had lingered a little too long with their fellow Tennessean, Jack Daniels, and caused a mild stir among the fleet. Other than that, it was a blast and I'd recommend it for anyone who hasn’t had the opportunity to do it.

I'm coming up for the UAB game and hopefully will "enlist" in the Vol Navy.

My friend just got a Sea Ray 29 footer and he says we are taking it to the game.

Ga fans have been known to make the entire trip on the river.

How would they go about doing that?

I thought the only navigable river in GA was the Chatahoochee?

Am I missing something?

Thy may have gone up I24 and put in at Nickajack (sp?). That would be the only way unless they are Georgia fans who live in Tennessee. That's always a possibility.

Not sure? I do remember they was from Ga. Im thinking it was the same year there was a private plane crash killing some Ga fans on the way back home. Id just assumed they had left out from Bama?
The boats was really nice and looked as if they had enough on board to make such a trip.
