Vol gear history

In the 60s and 70s the people on the west side of Neyland wore coats and ties and the ladies wore dresses and sported a chrysanthemum that you could buy outside the game. The west siders clapped approvingly after big plays and we’re not loud and boisterous. The rest of the stadium were more casual and louder. The students were loudest of all. I was a kid and we sat in the dry on the west side. I was always looking forward to the day I could “graduate” to the student section as it actually looked like fun. The west side was like going to church. That slowly changed by the 80s as people got more relaxed about dress codes in general, so went Neyland. Unless you are a frat boy at Auburn.

I remember as a kid, getting the Nikes with the orange swoosh from the athletic house!

I also remember Arby's selling teeshirts for whatever game that was coming up for like $5.00...They were simple but everybody wanted one just because.

back in the fifties and sixties, the students were always more casual, but the "older" crowd treated the game as a fashion show--both women and men! If you were a guy with a girl on your arm, you more than likely wore a jacket and tie! And she as wearing heels!

To the old timers that would be just the A house on Gay street. A must stop on a Saturday afternoon.

Back in the 60's, men wore jackets and ties at UT games...

I remember. Thinking on it, it was as ridiculous as hell (plus uncomfortable). If nothing else, the hippie era got us in to comfortable clothes.

My 92 y.o grandfather who went to his first game in 1945 and from about 1964-1998 missed only a handful of games including away games
And bowl games wore the same thing as far as I can remember . To home games
Gray slacks, either a white button down short sleeve or oxford long sleeved white button down shirt ……
AND a fitted NY Yankees hat . For away / bowl games a Navy blue fitted hat with a power T

He’s still invested to the point of knowing a few days ago about the 2 big recruits too but for whatever reason his home game attire
Was always a Yankees cap.

Except that black Nike interlocking UT hat. I hope they are making 500,000 of them.

VolShop claims they will have them next baseball season, I sure hope so. I went in today at the Student Union and they had every baseball cap in every size now that the season is over.

I remember back in the late 70s you could buy a roll of streamers on the street for $1. When we scored the sky would be filled with them.

Rolls of toilet paper would rain down from the upper deck.

One of my first Vols games was 1980 vs Ole Miss at the Liberty Bowl. Our tickets were one section over from the Ole Miss student section. All the undergrads were dressed up: jacket/tie for the guys, dresses for the gals.

I remember watching a co-ed hike up her dress and her date unstrapping two flasks from her thighs.

Made quite the impression on 10 year old me.

The athletic House.3 tv channels. No computers except at Glocker business building,no cell phones.You had to get out,talk to someone,little choice as to game wear.Back in the60's,to get Addidas,Puma shoes or gear,you needed to be on a track team.Nike was just a twinkle in someone's eye.

And Converse, Buster Brown, PF Flyers, and Keds ruled the day.
