The US isn't doing too shabby!

Europe is the happiest continent overall, with the giddy Scandinavian countries making up for former Soviet Block depression. North America isn't far behind, but the abject hopelessness of Haiti (the third most sad country in the world) and some Central American countries pulling downward from the highs of Canada and the US.

Africa is almost completely glum.

Speaking for myself...I am glad to say that overall, I am adequately gruntled. Furthermore, I propose more widespread use of the word 'gruntled' in daily conversations.

There appears to be a theme when going from happiest to least happiest.

That is good to hear! As I understand, when one is gruntled it is easier to get up in the morning and properly shevel oneself.
