So I can't find a thread (Mods,if one exists please move this post to where it belongs), but we arrived this evening for our annual GSMNP / East TN vacation (Edition #15 or so), and so...
Disclaimer: I grew up in the Smokies. Well, Powell...but we spent probably every other weekend in the Smokies, and so from the age of watch pocket high until I joined the Navy at the ripe old age of 17, the Smokies were my playground. I'll save the "been there, done that" stories for later, but there probably ain't a trail, falls, rock, or tree I haven't hiked, seen, fell on, or peed on.
So we're back for our annual vacay. Two weeks in God's Country. We're older now, so things have slowed down and flattened out a lot. But we still like to visit our favorite spots, and find that out of the way Mom & Pop restaurant that serves the best Beans & Cornbread, Catfish, Grits, Sweet Tea, or Pecan Pie we've ever had.
Made the drive up avoiding the Interstate as much as possible, as usual. This time we diverted into Sylva, NC, then came in via 40 West to Exit 447, then back roads to 32, then 321 in Cosby, and finally to our cabin (rented) overlooking Mt. LeConte. Stopped at Food City to get dinner for tonight and breakfast for tomorrow, at which point we will return (love the Food City in Gatlinburg, and the Kroger in Pigeon Forge) to stock up on victuals for the days ahead.
Hit rain just as we crossed into TN, and arrived at the cabin in the clouds and a steady cold rain. We're breaking in a not-quite-2-year-old male Rottie we adopted from a family friend who had to let him go, and so "Draco" (not our idea, but that's his name), who tips the scales just north of 100 lbs. and is still learning the leash and verbal commands, led me on a spirited, chilly, and very wet walk while he sniffed all the new smells this place offers. (Sigh)
So...weather next week looks good. Anything going on in G-Burg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, Maryville, Knoxville, or parts in between that we might enjoy? We were here for the Highland Games in Maryville last year, and had a blast. Turns out I actually like bagpipes.
'preciate any suggestions. Feels good to be home again. Someday, we'll find that acre of land and 2-bedroom cabin we can call our own. Lord willing, and I live long enough. Until then, this will have to do.
