Just for off-season conversations. What are the requirements for VFL fan? Had to go to UT? Had to live in the state? Had to go to state school?

Just know I do not consider myself one. I'm pretty sure the UGA football fan eliminates me instantly.

Let's have this discussion.

You probably gonna have to burn that Bulldog jersey and get properly beat in, but you have a lot of good info regarding the program so I think we can overlook your shortcomings!

So sad...however, Kirby is a VFL! Someone who pretty much played all of their career as a Vol. Some are more lenient on qualifying.

For fans, it’s being a UT fan since childhood, supporting the Vols win or tie (or lose) 😃. You don’t have to be a graduate (sidewalk alumni are welcome) but must pull for Vols in big 3 sports. No Vol Cats or Vol Dawgs….

Interesting. I'm the opposite. I'm a UT grad. My kid graduated from UGA. Not sure what that makes me, but when one considers in+state vs outta state tuition, I'm at least somewhat financially savvy.

I'm in... sort of remember feeling bruised and bleeding orange after some recent UGA games. Even thought after that missed field goal last year about ordering a leech from Amazon. But, as usual, they were out of stock & coaching at Michigan, Penn State, Auburn &... Ole Miss

I don't think you have to have been born in Tennessee, although I was. Don't think it's necessary that you went to school at UTK, although I did. The things you can't necessarily control shouldn't disqualify you.

I think loyalty is the #1 prerequisite. I don't have a second team. Some allowances can be made for family associations, but as a rule, don't ever root against the Vols.

Just my opinion.

Many years ago, University President Andy Holt said that anyone who walks across the campus at Tennessee is an alumnus. His point? Define it as you will, but becoming a Vol isn't exclusive - it's very much inclusive, and all are welcome to join us.

I don’t think there can be a true definition of a VFL in today’s climate. It’s something like Justice Stewart’s famous line about the definition of obscene material in Jacobellis v. Ohio: “I know it when I see it.”

VFL status is similarly subjectively objective.

should be simple as this....

When TN loses in any sport, esp the Big 3, do you hate life as you know it and avoid all things sports until the next game or do you just shrug it off and go on with your day/week like nothing happened? you know which is the VFL hahahaha.

Read this morning that Andy Holt is in some trouble for trying to pressure Farm Bureau insurance agents to support Marsha Blackburn for governor.

I found Nashville 5’s article.

A politically motivated lawsuit doesn’t mean anyone is in trouble. That is just part and parcel of the mid-term elections drawing near.

Seeing as Tennessee is culturally situated in the Bible Belt, we're probably informed on the question metaphorically.

Consider: The Protestant understanding of VFL inclusion would be that at any point in one's earthly life, all are invited to change their allegiance. Upon doing so, they will be readily and lovingly adopted into God's family, with full rights equal to those afforded even Abraham when he responded to the call and took on His identity.

Following those culturally embedded values, I'm accepting of even "deathbed VFL conversion." Maybe others will dismiss that as only a "2-point conversion"--but it still counts on the scoreboard of (after)life!

Even looking at it from an atheistic position, we would probably agree that humans get smarter over time. In which case, non-theists would be logically led to the same, later-in-life conclusion. It's never too late to become a VFL. (...though your expiration date may vary.)

VFL-dom is a choice to join a community (albeit one that's manic-depressive over the course of any season) rich in history and accepting of its fellow fans
(...outside of certain forums, and all live game threads). ;)
