They had a total 38000 at a game where they could get in a bowl by having a winning record, in state rival, and we probably represented half of the fans there, why are they even in the league?

They're a charter member and probably the best academic institution in the league. Also decent at most sports other than football. Most every conference has at least 1 private school that isn't very good at football.

With all that said I hate Vandy so much. Some of the worse fans I've ever encountered. Very embarrassing to lose to them again.

Vandy will never fill that stadium without the help of the other SEC teams. Nashville is full of fans from everywhere. Way more than Vandy fans.

Sadly, Vandy and SCAR allow SEC fans to thump their chests about Baseball.

I would sure like to see the OP's detailed analysis of how Vandy is a "financial drain" on the SEC.

Oh wait, that's right, he just posts stupid threads and never comes back.

It was fairly full, but it did feel like a large HS or Division 2 game to me.

From what I was told, there are high schools that play there.. And that awful commentator, horrible rap music played in between plays, lousy concession area, bathrooms are nasty and haven't been updated in years.. Yep it was like a high school atmosphere game. played like high school teams too. We made the decision "we won't go to any other games at candy."

If Butch hangs around much longer, we will need them to share their bowl winnings with us.

Other than losing, our seats were awesome. If there were 38,00 fans there, 30,000 were of the Orange and White variety. Bathrooms were small but, clean early. Parked around the corner for $15. Got in and out one hour before and after the game without a problem. Agree Vandy does everything possible to "rig" the game. The music, homecoming, waaay too many breaks to slow game down and break rhythm of game. Having said that, Vandy played us hard and tough as they always do. No love lost between the two. Their receivers and passing game was waaaay better than our QB pressure and secondary. On more than five times, our DB had a hand on the ball but, the receiver held on for huge gain.

Not that I like them, but:

They help with academics of the conference.

They're a founding member (with ties to two conference schools).

They're a larger college in the metropolitan area of Nashville.

They're in the Association of American Universities (AAU), a pretty exclusive sect of university - there are 60 total, of which now only 4 SEC schools are members (University of Florida is another, and the newer members Texas A&M and University of Missouri upped the number from 2) - which allows it (and to some degree the overall number of which allows the other SEC schools as a whole) access to better grant money.

Also, part of the reason for so low a number is that their stadium is only built to hold about 40,000 max, anyways (attendance was at around 94% capacity for that game). That's also partially a reason why they have been looking at the possibilities of either expanding it or building a new one...however with the university's location and the way the city's set up and grown there's not a lot of room available nearby to do such (which is going to an issue if they're trying to stay in that area of Nashville).

But I wouldn't call them a financial drain on the league; schools in the smaller-market/ smaller population states would be more financial drains.

I would disagree on the 30K UT fans. I was gouged a little; ten bucks for a couple of small hot chocolates; ouch.

The simple reason every big conference has a private school is just that: privacy. It's the best way to halt FOIA requests or nosy reporters. Sorry we can't give that out, private institutions aren't subject to the same rules public ones are. It's a great CYA move, and lousy sports success is simply a cost of doing business. The guys running these things aren't stupid.

If they want a bigger crowd for the Vandy-UT game, they could move it to Nissan Stadium and work with the Titans on scheduling logistics.

They don't want a bigge crowd. They want 20k with half being vandy fans. They don't need the money.
