Vandy AD Resigns

Vanderbilt parts ways with AD Malcolm Turner. The guy had been on the job for one year. Remember, Turner fired Bryce Drew after being on the job for less than two months. Drew had one tourney appearance in three seasons, and had lost lottery pick/PG Darius Garland for the season.

Turner, former NBA G League head, just took over last spring. Vandy FB went 3-9, MBB is 8-13 (0-8 SEC) and hasn't won a conference game since 2018, WBB is 2-7 in SEC...

Wonder what he has spent money on. Know he had to payoff basketball coach Drew but that was not his fault. Not sure if they had to payoff Assistant Football coaches that were let go. I’m not aware of any big money he committed to basketball or football venue renovations.

A year after (possibly disastrously) giving Derek Mason an extension through 2021.

Honestly, who else is Vandy going to get that will do consistently better? If there is that person, Vandy will just be a brief stop until their success gets recognized and they take a better job.

No offense to Ms Lee but not sure I would want to be AD right now? Someone will have to fire Mason and staff at the end of the year and pay off all of their contracts. They will average 5,000, at best, fans at non SEC home games this year. They will also have to decide about their Women’s basketball coach at the end of this season or next. Word is still out on Coach Stackhouse. Seems like a good guy not sure yet if he is the answer.

Nope.

"New Vanderbilt athletic director Malcolm Turner has extended the contract of football coach Derek Mason after the Commodores reached their second bowl game in three seasons."
New Vandy AD extends contracts for Mason, other coaches

Williams worked out the details and issued the extension. It did not get signed until after Turner was hired. Turner wanted Mason fired after the 2019 season, so don't believe for a minute he was the one who extended Mason.

Please. How many outgoing ADs have the power to stipulate that the incoming AD has to keep the current football coach? Turner even came out in support of Mason in early November of last year after the rumblings started about whether he would be Vandy's coach in 2020.

its amazing that Tim Corbin has stayed there with the s**t show they have. I respect the hell out of that man but remove him from the athletic picture there and they cant make a step forward without stepping on their own d**k. Either they're trying too hard to be PC and its backfiring every time or they are just stupid in their hires. Even the best fb coach they've had in a long time (Franklin) left with his own blemish. They might as well go back to the 70s and offer 2-for1 tickets with a coupon off Bunny bread.

Vandy operates totally different than every other SEC team. Purple Tiger is totally correct. That was totally a Williams deal signed off by Vandy higher ups before Williams left. Turner as AD has to come out in support of a coach he knows he can’t fire.
