So Poole is the top dog and some predict a 1500 yard season making him only the 2nd RB in UT history who has rushed for 2 consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. Here are my questions/thoughts:
if Marlin Lane shows up and is over the mental hurdle attached to a serious injury and he is in fact 100%, physically, do you all think he could be 1 on the depth chart by mid season? Lane is a RB who tore camps up and made guys like Malcom Brown look 100% inferior before the sidelining injury . I believe he will be playing with a chip on his shoulder after the way his recruitment went over at Clemson. He has a lot to prove although I assume he is eager to do so. BTW I'd take Marlin Lane over Mike Bellamy any day and so would a lot of Clemsonites.

Or do you think we would just split carries between Poole and Lane? That could be a pretty serious 1 - 2 punch. I'm not leaving Neal or Williams out of this but it just seems Marlin will be better than both from the day he steps on2 campus. Also, I have to imagine Tom Smith will Red Shirt. Although we may be surprised this summer with his talent.
Finally, the stable is only getting better. My lord! 2012 should be fun to watch with Marlin, Neal,Tom Smith,Imani (the dozer) Cross and with a little Orange luck, Kimbro. Thoughts?

Isn't it nice to talk about depth at positions? :) I know were still a young team but it puts a smile on my face to see us heading in the right direction.

Our RBs are average at best. I can name 6 RBs that I would rather have Crowell, Ballard, Lattimore, Dyer, Richardson and Childs.

No one with an IQ over 70 is predicting a 1500-yard season for Poole.

Personally, I've NEVER been wild about Poole. I do like his work ethic, drive and personallity but as far as a RB I think he is average at best. I hope he gets 1,000 yards this year but 1500 is a pipe dream.

1500 yards with a young gunslinger QB and a seemingly potent WR corps, with a OC known for airing it out?

I doubt it. Would mean we won a lot of games if it happened.

*puts on orange sunglasses*

The stable of Poole, Neal, & Fugate will out perform the great Razorback stable of McFadden, Jones & Peyton Hillis.

Not being Herr spring practice doesn't mean a thing. The minute Lane gets here he's the most talented back we have. He may ot start any but will get some carries. Poole is an average SEC back and no way he gets close to 1500 yrds.He will lose alot of carries to Neal and Lane.

carries will be split and I don't believe UT will have a 1000 yard rusher this year. Poole will be leader, but others get enough work to keep his numbers below 1000

I honestly would like to see lane RS and completely heal. Look at Lattimore. He's a phenomenal athlete but he was hurt last year. Unless Lane is head and shoulders better on a still rehabing knee I'm not a fan of him playing at all, no reason again unless he's noticeably better. I mentioned it in another thread but TW I think will get carries. Short yardage reps likely but I think he'll be like a back up FB type.

dyer benefited from having a very good o line and the defense waa so worried about newton ,that poole or any descent back could have had a season as good as his.the only one mentioned that i would say that was definatly better than ut,s rb was lattimore, the jury is out on crowell.with ut,s line being more experinced and bigger, stronger, and ut haveing a passing game the whole season, ut could have a 1500 yard back not saying it is poole ,it could be any of the backs.and as far as who gets the carries for the vols ,whoever does the best in fall camp should be first to get a chanch ,and who gets the most carries comes down to who has the vision and speed to hit the holes, and get alot of yards will be the number one back.

Poole knows the plays. Poole went through spring training. Poole will have a better OL, one that can block better than last year. Being a RB is more than just running. You have to know the plays, the changed calls at the line of scrimmage, have an awareness of what your individual OL personnel's tendencies are etc. Unless Lane is a caterpillar tractor - F 16 Eagle combo sits or plays a cameo role only this season.

Actually, it can happen. Teams can be so scared of the pass they get lax on the run and the RBs can ripped off big gains. You can end up with a back have 120-150 yards a game with only maybe 10-15 rushes because of these big chunks.
