They conveniently leave out how much the AD will make off of this recruiting class over the next 4 years. I'd take a wild guess and say they will more than make their money back.

The record attendance of the 2009 Orange and White Game would tend to make me agree with you.

A few mil for recruiting expenses is nothing for a big time program like UT, with tons of fatcat boosters, and millions in the bank from ticket sales, booster fees, merchandise sales, media revenue, etc.

The article seemed to lack context. It mentioned other schools being able to recruit locally but it didn't mention what they spend on recruiting. Is 1.1M way more than everybody else? And even if it is if it's working then roll with it.

Stayed within the budget so no big deal.
However i'd expect to see that budget widen as they earn more money, with the way we now recruit id expect expenses to sky rocket.

the issue is the current enconomic situation, not what is likely to happen in the next 4 years.

they are trying to find a way to terminate Smith without having to pay his entire contract.

Gonella was not able to get the salary he was told so he left.. (90K)..

Having to release this number in these economic times with the financial situaion at the University is a tough sell to people in this state...

I'm fully aware of how that money goes into athletic department but millions of tax payers in this state, Have no clue.. its a PR problem

Wow that's quite a bit of money...

I like how they have it down to the 16 cents though :)

are they still charging students for tickets? that might make up some of the cost as well :)

same story different day. football makes money....fans love the football program....football fans sing rocky top...football fans donate tons of cash...football funds the rest of the university.................and then the media and/or a few fans complain about the money spent that actually starts this cycle. Spend money to make money folks.

The AD supports itself and is completely separate from the education part of the University financially.....the AD even donates to the scholastic side of the house. I dont see how that is so hard for some of these idiot writers and voters in the state of TN to figure out. Tuition is always going up, you have to sell your soul for a parking permit....yet the school is "losing money". Sounds to me like that side of the house needs different leadership.

The AD can spend eleventy trillion dollars on new everything for all I care, as long as it isnt actively taking away from the education dollars..... which ours isnt and never has.
