looks like a little, "creative," accounting to me.

Can borrow from the University which has about a $400 mill surplus or the SEC.

Kevin Steele -- $450,000 per for 2 years = $900,000
Danny White buyout at UCF = $2,500,000
Danny White annual salary at UT = $1,800,000
Parker Search Firm to hire new HC = $120,000
Fulmer separation package -- $450,000 per for next three years = $1,350,000

With the appearance of out-of-control spending taking place by UTAD recently, this should shock no one that the prior year was a major deficit. Probably going to be worse in 2021 once the numbers provided above are factored in. Looks like there is a pattern going on.

That's it, only $28 million? Doesn't seem that bad all considered.

The Jones/Pruitt buyouts suck but I have a feeling it's not those costs that are causing the deficit, it's the reduction of expected revenue. You've a department that's based on revenue driven almost entirely by two sports, football and basketball. And that's not a very equitable split either. Within those you have fewer games scheduled overall and some of those canceled, so less broadcast revenue, no out of conference paid games, limited seating so fewer ticket sales, less concessions, less merch being sold at the bookstore, etc. etc. And then you add no bowl game for football, the SEC and NCAA tournaments canceled.

And while I'm sure they UTAD looked to reduce costs, there's fixed costs like facilities and funded scholarships that you can't reduce.

Remove Steele from that tally IF he refuses to accept an analyst position.

The WuFlu doesnt cause buyouts.

CoVid has caused a huge loss in revenue from ticket sales this academic year in football/basketball. The lost $ from football/basketball tickets is a LOT higher than buyout costs.
BTW, buyout costs were offset somewhat by the pay cuts the high paid athletic dept employees took this year. The Fulmer buyout is really the only current one that chaps me.
