Tebow struggles with NFL-style defense

After taking a look at the film of Florida's 23-13 win over Tennessee there are still plenty of concerns about whether Gators QB Tim Tebow will be able to make a quick transition to the NFL.

Volunteers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin came up with as good a game plan as possible against Florida's multiple weapons and wide-open scheme, giving Tebow a look at the kind of mixed coverages he will see at the next level. Tennessee often dropped seven or eight men into coverage and rushed only three or four and Tebow struggled for a variety of reasons.

First, the Vols did a good job of taking away his primary reads in the intermediate and deep areas of the field. That forced him to check down a lot and in many cases the rush was able to force Tebow to break the pocket. Tebow also seemed to struggle at times to recognize exactly what kind of zone coverage he was looking at, and that split-second indecision at times caused him to miss open receivers in other areas of the field. Tebow also turned the ball over twice and the second-quarter interception he threw to Vols S Eric Berry was a flat-out bad read.

It is important to note, though, that Tebow didn't get a lot of help from his receivers. The film showed a lot of Florida receivers running their initial routes but failing to adjust and work back to the quarterback if they didn't get open when they expected to. They are used to simply spreading the field and using their speed to get open and when that didn't happen Tebow was often left hanging, which often led to him tucking the ball and running.

From a college football standpoint Tebow showed tremendous competitiveness and courage and he took the game over by using his legs to take advantage of Tennessee dropping so many into coverage and giving him room to run. From an NFL scouting standpoint, however, this game only reinforces concerns about the very steep learning curve Tebow will face in the NFL. It is a similar situation to the one former No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith faced after running coach Urban Meyer's spread scheme during their time together at Utah.

I love this article, UF might of won the game but UT gets the last laugh which is why the Gator Nation keeps whining and making up excuses.

Tebow a fullback coming your way to the NFL near you

It wouldn't matter---Tebow is not an NFL type QB due to his arm strength and mechanics. He's a great college player with his running ability, but this will not matter much in the pros, since the QB position is passing and not running. Tebow will get drafted in the 2-4 round as a project by some team like Jacksonville or Tampa, primarily to sell tickets.

yeah Tebow would get a rude awakening if he tried to run on somebody like Ray Lewis. he would be running against stout NFL defenders not 18-22 year olds.

As if it wasn't obvious before, this season will save a bunch of GM's some money when they see how useless Tebow will be

Cost him the Heisman too.

I think it's a little early to be making this call, but definitely agree with the article. Other than Jacksonville, where they might tout him as a QB to increase ticket sales, I wouldn't be surprised to see some team draft Tebow and turn him into a TE. He's got the size for it, and certainly doesn't seem to mind the contact.

He really could be dangerous as a short yardage/goal line specialist. Heck, that's basically what Urban used him as to win his first NC. The elephant in the room of course is would the usage justify the roster spot. (though I suppose a backup QB is still a roster spot in case of injury)

I don't understand this. Last laugh? So you're happy he's not going to be a NFL qb yet he never lost a game against us and more than likely will end up with 3 NC's?

What do you mean you don't get it? If you were a player what would you want? Wins over UT or going to the NFL. Tennessee hurt Tebow more then he thought it would. This article was written by ESPN. His draft choice was already low now it has sunk even more. Just like Peyton might of lost 4 times to UF but he doesn't care because he will go down as one of the greatest qb's to ever walk the field. All college players dream of going to the next level. As of last sat UT hurt those chances even more. UT made him look stupid. You can't run every play in the NFL. You will get your dome cracked

I'm pretty sure Tebow will be the #1 overall pick in the draft. At least that's what LG told me.

I fully understand the knock against him at the next level but what I fail to understand is how as a UT fan that should make me feel better...

And I assure you that Peyton wishes he would have beaten Florida, hell people still give him hell on here for not doing it...

No I wish we would of won but I find it ironic that the team that finaly showed his weakness and everyone's concern's was the University of Tennessee. How is that for sour grapes. Yes we lost but now Urban knows he is in trouble for the future, if he didn't he wouldn't be making up excuses and whining so much. Never seen a coach who won make up so many excuses in my life.

And I've never seen so many personal victories taken from a loss. "Hooray, we hurt his draft stock!" Congrats, man. :good!:

This should be included in every prospective QB recruit that has UF on their list. Look at what "Oscar" Meyer coaching does to the QB's.........turns them into good college QB's not pro prospects.

Tebow will be on some nfl team for a few years as a project / backup QB, collect a few million, then head overseas to do missionary work.

not only would I include the NFL scouts evaluations of Tebow and Smith running Cryers system and chances of making it to the NFL, I would be pointing out Cryers use of Tebow as a running back and the history of his system having never developed a NFL quality running back to all the 5* RB's. I don't know why I'm writing the obvious, you can bet the ranch CLK and crew are preaching these points as we speak.

Yeah I really dont care what Tebow does in the NFL, I wanted to send him out with a loss and I dont care what he does from this point forward. I do think that we are coming up and I do think that Florida realizes that. I do think that Urbie does set his QB's up for failure, I hate how they are always staring at the sidelines before they snap the ball, in the NFL that stuff wont fly.

Since you no doubt didn't root for Florida back when they were horrible, you don't understand that sometimes, when your team is awful, you have to take what you can get.

I actually am starting to question this aspect of Tebow's game. After watching him this year, he seems to always be falling down when he begins to initiate contact. It's as if he refuses to actually try and break a tackle. He instead starts to fall and then tries to deliver a hit as he's falling (on his own).

Maybe it's just me, but that's what I see.

This is exactly the reason for Urbie's comments about scaling back the offense in the game. He wanted to protect little Timmy's draft status.

While I wish Tebow all the luck in the world in whatever he does and believe he's capable of anything, if he never took a snap as a QB in the NFL I wouldn't care that much. I don't care about the NFL and can barely entertain the idea of watching the games. Just saying.
