More of a Memphis bball post since I haven't seen UT play yet this year but I was at the Memphis season opener last night and had a couple thoughts.

-Attendance was a little over 16k, not bad but for as much hype as this "preseason number 1"(i.e. Memphis homer Gary Parrish's rankings) I was shocked to see the place wasnt packed. Granted it was UT Martin, but still we pulled in over 19k against u cal(pa).
-UT Martin had a guy put up 30+. Memphis does not do well at guarding the 3(look for teams to try to exploit that).
-Derrick Rose is the real deal. He is very fast, has great vision and unbelievable hops(blocked a shot and his hand was above the square on the backboard).
-Memphis is not very good down low. Dorsey didn't play but their PF & backups were not impressive. The kid(Taggert) playing down there had 15 boards, but only 5 points. Guard play on the other hand is very very good.

Memphis won by 30 something, and they are not playing a few of their players due to injury so it was hard to take too much away from it. But the showdown here in Memphis is going to be a good one. Should be nonstop action the whole game.

Like I said, I haven't been to a UT bball game yet this year, but I know most of the team/managers pretty well and have heard nothing but good things from all of them. Can't wait till I can get up there to see it live!

A team that slows the game down and runs a halfcourt offense will beat Memphis....Happens every year....

There were not 16K at the game. Not even close. For every seat that had a warm butt, there was one empty one.

I already sent a scathing note to my "U of M" buddies telling them I don't want to hear them talk about their b-ball team if they can't even go to support the team.

On a bright note - I was very comfortable and able to spread out with no one sitting anywhere around me.

I too enjoyed being able to stretch out. Being 6'5" and having to fold up to sit in those seats is not something I enjoy doing, especially since it was Memphis and TN was not in anyway involved(but it was a free ticket and I work downtown). 16k was the announced attendance though so that's what I went by.

I also immediately sent a message to all Memphis friends letting them have it for not filling that place. we had 19+k for an exhibition and they can't even beat that for their first real game. Don't think that wasn't included in the message.

VolfanMike, you got any more you can get your hands on. Definately a game I'd love to see live.

UT-Martin...on a weeknight

big whoopie! that they didn't sell it out.

I can imagine quite a number of non-conf games last year when we didn't exactly have impressive crowds...and they were far less than 16k (and don't go digging up numbers, b/c they only list PAID attendance figures).

This wasn't a meaningless midseason game - this is GAME NUMBER ONE. Pretty crappy turnout for the first game regardless of the opponent. That's all.

We weren't even remotely close to selling out against MTSU last year in our opener. UM vs. UTM is even more meaningless than that one.

I'll all for bashing Memphis, but to bash Memphis on this one is to also bash UT.

i attend UT-Martin. Our basketball team only returned 1 player from last year, a year we won maybe 5 games. No one goes to our away basketball games, even if it is only 2 hours away. The reason i didn't go is because i just got back from the UT-ULL game from that weekend. But Martin does not travel well, so that was a big reason i'm sure also.

Good to see the usual suspects on here trashing Memphis. Looking like fools the last two years as Memphis ran up a 5-1 record against the SEC, with four of those games being on the road or neutral floors, and made two Elite Eights isn't enough. Well, you're going to look even more idiotic when the Final Four convenes in San Antonio. February 23rd probably isn't going to make you look very smart, either.

You completely missed the point of that one there bud. I'm not sure where you're from but here in Memphis all I've heard about is preseason number one this and this is our National Championship year that. For a fan base that had actually made up shirts that said preseason number one and never shut up about how good they are going to be and how this is the year they win it all, 16k for your first game is pretty terrible.

And last year we were not preseason number 1 in one poll and number 3 in the others(aka this highest ever in Memphis's program history for preseason rankings) so you're point there is null and void. and if you didn't see, UT had a midweek game last night vs. LMU and still put almost 19k in the seats.

#5, not sure of his name, is a stud! Kid can flat out shoot the ball. Hangin' 30+ on anyone is very very noteworthy. I've heard from many that he should get a pretty decent shot at the league

I must have missed something. I didn't read where anyone bashed Memphis' teams potential to do well this year. Someone made a comment that they thought UT should easily handle Mem, but other than that where's the bashing? I think IE was bashing the Mem fanbase.

I said UT should handle Memphis this year...As should UCLA, KU, or NC if they play any of those three teams to...Memphis is very athletic but their style of play is nothing more than a street ball tournament...Granted they have made it deep in the tourny in previous years but what has been the outcome??? They matchup against a team that can run a set offense and pressure defense and UM cracks...They will have an impressive record by the time Feb 23rd rolls around this year because of the lack of talented teams in the conference...I think UT handles them, but lets get something straight here....I am a Duke Basketball fan first and Vol second so in no way do I have orange sunglasses on for this one...If Memphis was so talented and such a great team why did they get manhandled in Knoxville last year? And why do they never seem to win the big one???
