Well, we play 3 cupcakes a year. Typically (not always), that breaks down as 2 Group of 5 teams, and 1 FCS program.Obviously it takes two to tango, but I never understood why we don’t schedule only in state “pay to win” games. I’d rather pay for UTC’s and ETSU’s budget than Akron’s and Ball State’s.

There really aren't a lot of Group of 5 teams in the state of Tennessee. I think MTSU and Memphis are it. And there's no way we're going to make either of them annual opponents. That would feel way too much like allowing them to become rivals. That ain't happening.
So those two Group of 5 games, we have to look a little further afield in Conference USA, or the American Conference, or Sun Belt, or MAC. This year, we got two from the MAC.
I do agree with you that we should always try to ensure our one FCS game each year is against a Tennessee school. That we totally ought to always do. There are like a half dozen of them, so plenty of room to rotate among them.
Oh, one other point: I think the current NCAA rules only allow FBS teams to play one FCS game a year and still count on our win-loss record. That's one reason it's the formula: 2 G5, 1 FCS.
Go Vols!
p.s. When I said "3 cupakes a year," I wasn't counting Vandy, since they're part of the 8 SEC games a year. LOL. Otherwise,...totally.
Yeah, but that's okay, folks won't mind if we have a conversation within the conversation, heh.Yeah, I got to thinking after my post and could only come up with Memphis and MTSU as in state G5 schools. I, selfishly, wouldn’t mind seeing them play Memphis again, but there’s numerous reasons why that’s a bad idea. MTSU I wouldn’t mind, but we’d be sure to get their best shot every year. Still, keeping it regional (WKU, Southern Miss, Troy, etc) would surely be more interesting than Akron or Ball State. Zero reason to schedule out of state FCS schools though.
Good point on the NCAA rules, I forgot only one FCS win could count. But anyway, this has already gone way off topic.
what's the story behind the Summitt Blue and why the lady Vols have that as their secondary? I've always been curious about it
