UT hires Indiana’s Derek Owings as its new S&C coach

Oh look yet another “fan” trying to demean the hire of Owings. Heupel makes two absolutely home run hires and we have fans trying their best to knock it. Sad.
I am gonna say this every day until we hire a S&C coach. Scott Cochran and Tommy Moffitt are out there.

Fair enough. I can respect someone who swims against the current for something they believe in.

But if Owings proves to be a winner, what say you then?

"Even when you plant your feet, plant your flag, and declare this a good hill to die on...have an escape route just in case you underestimated your enemy. Better to live to fight another day than to inflate your enemies' accomplishments by your death."

I may be me but I sense some “issue” between Saban & Cignetti. I don’t think Saban picked them in any of their CFP games & Cignetti doesn’t appear to kneel at little Nicky’s feet. Cignetti is 63 or 64 so I doubt he looks for a challenge like Bama in 2-3 years.
He’ll retire at IU.

Indiana??? Vols are much better football program be real. Duke basketball has been dormant the last 10 years if we are being honest. Vols are a top 15 football program historically Indiana maybe top 40
I think he was comparing Tennessee Football to Indiana Basketball. I don’t disagree, although Indiana is a tier higher in terms of basketball pecking order. Due to their number of national titles. I’d compare the Vols football history to more of a Michigan State or Syracuse in hoops.

We are talking about 23 year old transfers who got big pay days because they were in great shape before they arrived at Indiana.

Are you going to hire the Dodgers hitting coach because they pay the most money for the best proven players?

There’s a quote for people like you, too: "You can't cheat an honest man; never give a sucker an even break, or smarten up a chump."
They did not get big pay days lol. Most were not even looked at by other teams. They had 24 seniors on this team and most of them were last year starters.

What’s your point?
My point is that there was a thread on here a while back, "S&C Coach Wish List - Who Say You?", and all of the knowledgeable football fans on here made their wish list. Owings was hardly mentioned in five pages, and now he is the greatest hire ever.

Who said he was the greatest hire ever? If someone actually said that shame on you for taking them seriously.

If you dont like the hire just say it. Its dishonest to go the route youve taken. If we had hired one of the 2 you wanted would you still be trying to show everyone that we don't need a S&C coach but older experienced players?

On WISH lists, I don’t think anyone honestly thought the guy responsible for the best conditioned squad in the playoffs was obtainable…I didn’t. Lot of blown reality checks. Anyone arguing this wasn’t a baller move by Heupel/White has a determined mindset and needs to be left alone with it

First injury we have he'll be here telling us we should've hired his guys. "How's that NC winning S&C corch lookin now.?" Almost like hes happy we had an injury. Lol.

So anyone’s analysis of REALITY or POTENTIAL should be tempered by uninformed input on a social media board? Nothing wrong with floating one’s preferences, or sharing historical perspective, BUT for a SUPPORTER be excited and hopeful that the hire, one obviously deferred to allow the prime target’s season to end, is perfectly acceptable. Especially in light of the on field production by a less star blessed roster than those they took down along the way.

For sure those playing the Coach is taking too long and inept cards now will double down on another ego saving tact in response to the generally accepted better than solid hire. They can join forces with the coach is too fat and needs to shave, QB is too light, roster is too young, mantras and even if fans provide the same value add to the program trolls do. So what is the difference.

Just part of the free speech world we live in.

It appears old farts like me just have a lower tolerance for it and see the need to call them out to provide the outside world an offset. It gives an appearance of acceptance to just let it lay there.

Still wish for a DON’T LIKE button to do so instead of having to use REPLY. Think it could really declutter the board. AND provide a more accurate view of our world.

I think it is a great hire. I really did not have anyone that I would recommend, I think I did mention Hans and Frans.

I went to UT in the 70's, so I have been a supporter for a while.

Okay I guess I just misunderstood the above.

I got your point and would normally agree with it, just not in this example.

You are missing it. IU also went the entire season almost injury free. Whereas we always have tons of injuries. No disrespect hit you seem to just want to find a flaw with this hire. I mean how can you not say this was an absolute joke run hire?
I agree with what I believe your intent is even if I don't know what the hell a joke run hire is.

The comment about Cochran and Moffitt was NOT from me. It was from someone else who usually jumps on the latest bandwagon.

Very nicely and accurately stated, I couldn't agree more, I have been complaining about needing a dislike option for a while. Regardless of what we may think we know, none of us know anything about what went into the decision. Some here just seem to revel in bitching about anything and everything about the team we claim to support, including how the coach looks which last I checked has zero bearing on the team. There are times when we get a commitment here that I wonder if this is an actual Tennessee site or somehow I wound up on a gator site. We all have opinions, some of us defer to the coaches since they are the ones who's jobs are on the line while others seem to love beating a dead dog for 5 pages bitching about the commitment or the hire. If I were that damn unhappy with all or most of the decisions my team made I might consider finding a new team. But hey, you do you, you seem to really enjoy being unhappy and trying to take others with you.

“You cannot be soft when you go to war”. Love it. This was a SOFT team last year.
I’m still giving them a little excuse for being super young, but yeah we got pushed around and gassed in the second half for much of the season. I think with the transfers and early departures we will be young again. I can’t wait to see what happens with Arion this year.

I read that he just had surgery? I hope he's able to contribute.

A S&C coach adds more than just work out details. He sets the standard for self discipline to adhere to the standards he sets for each player. By working with each player over time he not only changes their bodies, he changes their mine sets, self discipline, attention to detail. This traits translate not only to stronger players but players with self accountability. Pays dividends on the field.
I posted this days ago. It applies across all age groups. It may affect some age groups different than others but the principles a S&C set, reflect not only stronger players but individual accountability
