I don't think the talent drop is as bad as it is portrayed. UT has done well recruiting most of the last 4 years.

2010: #9
2009: #10
2008: #35
2007: #3

Yahoo Sports: Rivals.com 2010 Team Recruiting Rankings

2006 was #23 but not that many redshirt players.
On paper I think you would have to say we definitely have the talent to field a top 25 team.

Then why were we starting walk ons on both sides of the ball?

Great, now why are nearly half of those players on those lists MIA?

The OP is exactly right!!! I clearly remember those classes meeting needs! I mean really, I have never seen so many talented lineman in my life.

Many have been kicked off team...berry went early as did rogan. We play in the SEC..top 10 is surviving. Top 5 is doing well.

Exactly. Like I said in another thread, top 10 doesn't mean nearly as much when that barely breaks into the top HALF of the SEC.

Yet somehow UCLA beat our 'top ten" talent two years in a row.

I still cannot for the life of me figure out how they won both of those games. :banghead:

Star ratings don't mean everything. It just means that you have talent on the team. The problem with that is you have to develop those players. Something Fulmer & Co. weren't able to do the last few years he was at the helm.

Crompton!
I remember in '08 when UCLA's second string QB went down a week before the game so they started their third string QB Kevin Craft who set a record with four first half interceptions. That’s the equivalent of losing to Jim Bob Cooter!

Good post LWS. I've looked over this stuff and wondered to myself where a lot of these guys go on more than one occassion. The 2007 class losses have been pretty tough for us to overcome followed by a subpar 2008 class (not that the players are subpar, but it was a small class and we have yet to see a lot of those guys with significant playing time). We're still a year or two away from getting back to our early 2000's-type teams.

Considering 2 of the 3 top 10 classes you're talking about will be 1st and 2nd yr players this fall, that doesn't really help in the SEC. The other top 10 class is half gone and just look at LWSVOL's post to see how terrible the 2008 class is. UT's okay for the future if they can continue to bring in good recruits but I don't see top 25 for this year's football team.

We could in theory go 9-3 or 8-4 but even that would be tough to stay in top 25. If we do it, it would be by the skin of our teeth.

The 2008 class on paper was the worst of the 4... in reality it will have as many if not more real contributors than the 2007 class.

If the rankings are legit then the last two classes will enable UT to be competitive sooner than most think. Young talent has its obvious liabilities but talent is talent. It still comes down to coaching.

Is that reality a good thing for UT right now?
