I am taking my grandfather up to the Ark State game this season and due to his limited mobility, have to design a new approach to gameday. I need to keep his walking as flat as possible and as short as possible. My normal routine is to stay on the Strip. He will not be able to walk all of the hills to get to Neyland.

I was wondering what kind of atmosphere is happening in the Old City on gameday. I know there is a shuttle that runs from the district over to Neyland. Is that the best option? Any specific bars recommended for watching early games in the Old City? It has been years since I have been there. I had also considered Calhouns but hear that is a pretty steep incline as well.

This will be his first game to attend in Knoxville in well over 25 years so I am trying to get as much pre-game flavor as possible before we head over to the Hill for the kickoff call in show and the band marching in the stadium.

I apprecaite any ideas. I was not sure if this was the correct forum to post this so move it if necessary.

There's a new "upscale" sports bar going into the old Hooray's/Banana Joe's/Red Iguana space. I can't give any opinion of it because I haven't been in town to take a look at it. Will probably check it out before the Southern Miss game.

I don't think it has opened yet. I go to the old city all the time, but usually am drinking so I may just have not noticed. :toast:

That's too bad. I'm really sorry to see the Red Iguana go. /sarcasm

The Old City isn't the best place to pregame, especially for Ark. State. But in Knoxville it's hard to do much by avoiding hills.

Thanks for the recommendation. I know the hills will be tough to navigate. I wish there was some kind of shuttle other than a taxi from the Strip over close to Neyland.

The Hobo rollercoaster earns its nickname, most of the time. The homeless tend to hang out on it to get out of the heat. Hard for an actual taxpayer to get a seat, let alone a non-smelly seat.

Calhouns on the river is not at ALL steep. That was misinformation. I run road races all the time on Neyland Dr and it's flat as a pancake from under the Gay St. Bridge to the Ag Campus.

As far as taking a cab, my grandparents stopped going to games, but before they were too disinterested we could have a taxi drop us off at the top of the hill above the money wall. All they had to do was just walk down the hill toward the stadium. Of course after the game they had to make their way back up that hill.
