UT fans know why Florida won't win title...

Good article, and a reminder to the Gators to be humble. But there is one key difference.

I am tired of hearing about TeBlow as everyone else is, but he is one of the best leaders I have ever witnessed. That being said, I agree they may not go undefeated, but if they only lose one and win the SEC championship most likely they will play for the NC. JMO

For your sake, you better hope the players are humble, because the fan base sure isn't. Great write-up, Griff!

Very good article and I agree that they dont go undefeated. But who is going to trip them up? I am going to go with the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern for the upset....Kidding, I say they don't get out of Death Valley undefeated.

Which game you guys going with?

One difference between the two teams Griff didn't mention: UT won the NC in 1998. The Gators have never gone undefeated or won a national championship. Don't know why they'd start this year.

I don't think comparing 1999 UT to 2009 UF is really accurate. UF returns every defensive player and every defensive coach from the national title team. They return 32 of the 35 players that traveled on defense. They added some talented freshmen. The Florida defense will be better in 2009 than 2008.

Even if the offense regresses slightly, it won't be as bad as 2006, and UF won the national title that year.

Plus, Tennessee was not a "dominant" team in 1998. Some of those wins were extremely close and maybe even "lucky." Some of those close wins went the other way in 1999.
Florida in 2008 was a dominant team. Most of the games weren't even close.

See what I'm trying to say?

I've read this three times and still don't understand it.

The stage is sure set for Florida to repeat, Tebow, Defense, etc. the one fly in the ointment might be a loss, as their schedule, outside of the SEC games is not stellar. So if there are two other 1 loss teams, say a Texas or Oklahoma from the Big 12, and an undefeated team, say Penn State or OSU from Big 10, or even a 1 loss USC in the PAC 10...Florida might not garner the votes for the BCS title. Notre Dame could also slip in through the back door with 1 loss...although I think their schedule calls for an undefeated season for title contention.

The race does not always go to the swiftest and the fight is not always one by the toughest...but you ought to bet your money on both. As much as I would love to see the Gators stumble, espeically if it was the beloved VOLS that tripped them, ...they do look like the swiftest and toughest for 09.

Let the games begin, speculation cease, and the VOLS come stormin through the T!!

I think he meant that UF never won an NC while being undefeated. All the more reason why the players are motivated to do so.

I think that you are right but it still makes no sense since they will not have to go undefeated to play for and win the NC (as long as that 1 lose is not in the SECCG).

Use the wrong preposition?

Edit: Sorry, 4 people beat me to this post while I looked up preposition to make sure I was using the right term...LOL

The writer is certainly entitled to his opinion, but to compare '99 UT and '09 Florida is apples and oranges. Florida's strength will be it's defense which returns every starter. They have proven they can win without Percy Harvin when they beat Alabama in the SEC championship game. That UT team was not as deep and as talented as this UF team.

Even a modest drop off in offensive production will be offset by a very deep and experienced defense that was 4th in the nation in scoring defense and 1st in interceptions last season. That defense will be even better this season. Could they lose a game? Sure -but not for the reasons he believes.

No, I'm not a flat earth person. To clarify my earlier post, I don't think a team necessarily has to go undefeated to win a MNC. But if another team DOES go undefeated and also wins a major bowl game, then I don't believe UF (or anyone else) can legitimately claim a MNC.
