UT Can't Attract A Great Football Coach?

Objection to the form of the question.

Of course we can attract a great football coach. However, we are very unlikely to lure a great football coach away from Oklahoma, Southern California, Ohio State, Alabama, or any other school which can match all of the four criteria (you left out a few) that were mentioned. We are not "more attractive" than they are.

Also, while we may be "as desirable" as any other job in the SEC, I would say that UGa, LSU, Auburn, and Alabama are "as desirable" as us, with USC and Arkansas close enough that the difference can be made up with money(Clemson, though not in the conference, probably falls into this category.)

You also mentioned UGA, LSU, Auburn and Alabama, last time I checked these guys were VERY secure in their jobs. So, the question is . WHO IS OUT THERE? I mean that can actually make this program win again, and by that I mean beat Florida, WIN THE SEC!!!

1. A successful coach from a lower-tier job;
2. A coordinator from a top program;
3. A coach prematurely or erroneously fired or retired from a top job.

There are about 3,000 threads on the various candidates on these pages, but I think most of the viable names mentioned fall into one of those categories.

I agree with this. Based on MH hires I would argue that his order of preference would be #1, #3, then #2. He wants someone with HC experience but he likes the "up and comer" type of hire. I doubt he will reach out to a coordinator at another school unless he has to.

Dave Clawson was a perfect type one candidate coming to this year. I don't know if Hamilton will give up on Clawson and go after other type one coaches.

That may be true, but all of those lower-tier jobs are not equal. Richmond, for example, is not the same as North Carolina, Wake Forest, or even Boise St.

I think we can rule out 1aa coaches moving up, however.

It would be politically hard to keep Clawson, although I wouldn't be surprised if he could do better than Philm-er if he were HC.

We can. Old people that don't like change think we can't.

I'm not old and believe in intelligent, well thought out change. I don't believe in change for the sake of change or when the risks are greater than the risks of no change.

I believe that balance has tipped against CPF this season. He simply hasn't met reasonable expectations much less high ones.

However, there are significant reasons why a great HC might pass on UT. Among them:

1) Extremely poor recruiting base compared to other SEC teams

2) The fan base ISN'T that loyal and would hardly be patient or "understanding" if the guy didn't start beating top tier SEC teams right out of the gate.

3) There are similarly solid and storied programs outside the SEC that would be easier to win at and would provide more security and just as much money.


I believed that CPF should get a chance to finish turning the program around after 05. He failed so I think a change is called for... but I'm not blind to the risks... The risks are very high. If MH doesn't hit a home run the first time up then UT could be in the dumper for many years.

Why do so many posters think UT can't attract a great coach? Here are some reasons why we can:

1) Best stadium and facilities in the SEC

2) Great and Loyal Fans

3) We can pay salary and benefits equal to any school

4) We play in the best football conference in the country

Does anyone seriously think that any other SEC Head Coaching position (other than maybe Florida) would be more desirable than UT?

1. True, but I don't think stadium size, etc. will be a heavy factor in bringing in a good coach.

2. Kinda ironic that "loyal fans" would be an argument to bring in a new head coach to replace the current head coach that most of the posting fans want to get rid of... Not saying that our fans aren't loyal, especially to this program, but Fulmer is seen in a different light around the NCAA than he is by Vols and SEC fans.

No doubt that a new head coaching candidate would be weary when his predecessor was run out the school when he went to the SEC 'Ship the season before and won the Bowl game.

4. This can be kind of a draw back. Better competition means it's harder to win. That's why so many people think a 1-loss SEC team is almost equivelant to an undefeated record. Some coaches may be intimidated by that, and may opt for their current comfort.

May be true, but when was the last time a school from the ACC won the crystal football?

The 99 Noles, but that was the last BCS bowl the ACC has won though.
