Tennessee’s 2011 football recruiting budget was nearly $1.5 million. No other Division I-A football program spent a million dollars. Tennessee spends frivolously as if it’s printing money in Estabrook Hall next to Neyland Stadium.

Behind Tennessee nationally are Alabama ($981,000), Auburn ($950,378), Georgia Tech ($883,430), Georgia ($623,224), Texas Tech ($611,910), Florida ($602,929), Oregon ($590,683), North Carolina ($580,200), Texas ($577,976), Michigan ($577,663), Illinois ($545,363) and Army ($511,840). Data from secrecy-shrouded Penn State and private schools such as Stanford, Syracuse, Southern Cal, Northwestern and Vanderbilt were not available

Screw the negavol. This is a positive. You have to concentrate on your weakness. Our weakness has been a dearth of talent so to solve it, you have to go to the ends of the earth to get great players. You need a big budget when you have a lot less instate talent than your competitors. Way to go Dooley.

1. Name another traditional college powerhouse with so little high school talent nearby.

2. When you are a top 40-60 team like we have been for 5 years, but are trying to recruit like a top 10 team, something has to give. Then pair that with the lack of local talent (usually), and you have a 1.5 million dollar recruiting budget.

This isn't rocket science.

When adding cars, suits, jobs for girlfriends...bama beats us.

When adding payment to players, Clemson takes the crown.

Tennessee has been near the top of the list for quite a while, so this revelation is nothing new. As an earlier poster pointed out, the dearth of football talent causes UT football staffers to travel the nation recruiting talent to come to Knoxville. This was going on during Fulmer's reign as head coach and it may have been so during the Johnny Majors regime. In essence if Tennessee is to gain/remain relevant they will always have to out spend the competition.

Nobody is being negative. This topic comes up about every 3 or 4 months. Way to go me

I imagine Tennessee is traveling quite a bit more looking for recruits than Alabama has to. Doesn't cost as much to walk across the street to find studs.

Who cares....its not like they are losing money.

It may also depend on how other programs reflect expenses in their budget. We may show every expense under recruiting but other schools have it in the general operating budget. Meals, entertainment, etc. Just a thought
