This is something that has bothered me at our football games...it's not a big deal, just something that I think deserves attention.

After the Pride finishes their halftime show they play our Alma Mater. I don't know why they don't scroll the lyrics on the scoreboards, but you need to know the lyrics. Technically, this song is for the alumni, but I believe all fans should know and embrace it.

Presently, when it is played at the end of halftime, I would guess around 1,000 people or less actually sing along with the band. I'm proud to be a graduate of UT, I'm proud to be a fan of UT, and I'm proud to be a Tennesseean.

So, if you agree, learn the lyrics and sing along with the band when it's played. I think it would be a pretty powerful experience if 90,000 - 100,000 people were showing their pride for UT.

I will post a video of the song as well as the lyrics below:

On a Hallowed hill in Tennessee
Like Beacon shining bright
The stately walls of old U.T.
Rise glorious to the sight.

So here's to you old Tennessee,
Our Alma Mater true
We pledge in love and harmony
Our loyalty to you.

They used to always scroll the lyrics, I just noticed this season they have not. I always sing along though at halftime and when the Alma Mater is played during pregame.

Used to have them, but might have just been prior to the new electronic signage around the stadium. Go to enough games, you should know it by heart...always take off my hat, and know the words by heart.

Since a lot of the fans at the game can't claim UT as their Alma Mater, I'm not sure why they should be singing it. As a student and soon to be graduate, I take pride in having spent my 4 1/2 years here at Tennessee. Although I agree that all alumni and students should sing it, I'm not sure that fans that never attended should sing it. It seems like it would somehow cheapen the experience for all the alumni/students.

I would like for everyone to stay after the game is over and sing it with the players, coaches, etc on the field. It would be a nice tradition.

I do agree that all alumni should be able to sing it, and should sing it proudly. I learned the song by going to the home football games 27 times during my 4 years in Tennessee. By the end of the first year, I knew how to sing it.

My Dad's entire family went to UT, I did not. The Alma Mater is awesome, but I think that it is something uniquely between UT and its students/alumni. The words mean something special to all those that have attended UT, and if I were to sing them it wouldn't be right. That's JMO though. Hope I don't get ripped.

That would be cool. The Tennessee Waltz sort of serves that purpose now though....

As a fellow fan-but-not-alum, I feel the same.

I agree. Tennessee is unique because it is one of the very few schools if not the only one that performs the alma mater at halftime instead of pregame. It's amazing that the band performs the same UT at the end of each halftime show for over 100 years.

I'm an alum and so are my parents, but we seldom sing, even though we know the words. It's awkward to sing when no one around you is. A lot of alumni just hold up their cups in a toast.

Great points! But, some of the fans that aren't alumni -- for whatever reason, would give anything to have had the opportunity to earn a degree from UT. So, if they want to sing the Alma Mater along with us, I have no problem with it. They love the university as much as we do. Our soon to be newest SEC member calls their non-alumni fans "T-shirt fans"..... which I think is very disrespectful. Fans shouldn't be branded with a title just because they didn't attend the school. Those fans probably love UT just as much, if not more in some cases, than current students and alumni.

I'm an alum. I sing the alma mater every time I get to see a game (not as frequently as I'd like unfortunately, but that'll change in the future). I also sing it every time it comes on my Pride CDs in my car. There won't be a change in that.

OK, I'm shamed. I'll sing it when I come in for the UGA and LSU games. If you're sitting near me, you'll probably wish I had just raised my cup.
