im tennessee FOOTBALL all the time but.... i really could care less about tennessee basketball. i have almost the same level of passion for my beloved kansas jayhawk basketball. I was kind of curious how that sits with u guys who claim to love tennessee. And id be willin to bet that we have more than a few others that have different schools for different sports.

I would have to say that I bleed orange and white all the time. Unless you are a native of another state/city, I think you should support your college, whether it is in golf, football, basketball. But, we all have the right to choose who our teams are, regardless if some of us are on the bandwagon because of a teams success.

True here, can't give up on Indiana Hoosiers in basketball, ties go back for years and years, but everything else it is TENNESSEE. Since Coach Knight left IU my fervor has decreased but with VOL Football it increases yearly and has surpassed IU basketball. I am hoping Tom Crean can bring those feelings back. Give me the choice of IU NCAA basketball champs or Tennessee BCS Champs...hands down the VOLS win.

I have other programs that I like and follow but all of them take a backseat to UT. I was born in NC and have relatives that played ball for UNC, NC State and Gardner Webb but that doesn't compare to my passion for UT.

Vol all the way. And what's funny is all the East Tennessee natives that like UNC in basketball, but I guess everyone likes a winner...no matter where they're at.

TN, all the way. Having grown up in SC I do pull for SC when they aren't playing TN, but TN football, basketball, baseball, jai alai, whatever, TN is the only team for me.

No different school for different sport for me, but college football is about the only team sport that I ever watch with any regularity.

i've never really understood why some people are for one college in one sport and a different college in another. i'm not saying everyone that does this is like what i'm about to say, but the whole concept seems like it should be associated with bandwagon fans. i keep up with ut football the most, but i always hope that ut can finish up there at the top in every sport.

Tennesee football fan and Duke basketball fan. When I first started playing organized basketball as a kid I idolized Bobby Hurley because we played the same position, ever since then Duke has been my number one basketball team, but I cheer for UTK as well in the sport.

I have followed Duke basketball religiously for around 20 years or so. But, the past couple of season I have gotten out of basketball altogether. I hardly watch any game until the tournament then I pull for the underdogs. Basketball is not as appealing to me as it use to be.

Yeah, I understand. In the past I couldn't wait for basketball season to come around, so I could watch my beloved Dukies. However, it seems like the older I get the more excited I get about UTK football, and Duke basketball seems to take more of a backseat.

Periodically you'll see people get into it on the board about whether the so-called sidewalk alums are somehow not as "authentic" as alumni and former students. It's this sort of picking-and-choosing that sparks those kind of arguments, IMO, because so frequently it's just naked frontrunning. Funny how you never see any guys who are fans of Duke or UNC football and UT basketball.

I can see why fans who never went to school there would see nothing weird about picking and choosing sports; to you, UT football and basketball don't have any more to do with each other than the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cincinnati Reds. But to me, orange and white doesn't just represent the local sports team. It's seven years of my life and two degrees. It's walking up the Hill a thousand times, and 4 AM drunken Vic & Bill's, and smuggling booze and girls into the dorms, and meeting my wife. It's learning to be an adult and a man. UT's teams are "we" to me in a way that no pro team could ever be. That's why we alumni sometimes curl our lips at guys who are glad to jump on board the football bandwagon but think the basketball team's not good enough. It's about more than sports to us.

i can understand the "true vol" sentiments. I have been a tennessee fan since i was about 7. i became a kansas basketball fan when i was aboout 9. right before jacque vaughn and scott pollard and raef lafrentz. i am passionate about both teams and have seen both win national championships. im never jumpin ship on either.

I pull for the Vols in other sports too but have real passion only for football.

In basketball having grown up in North Carolina, I became an ABC fan... Anybody But Carolina. I hate UNC almost as bad as UF or ND... almost I said.

I'll try to answer this one, and address a few of the posts that followed yours as well but I feel compelled to once again state that I do not really follow any college sports other than football.

I lived in middle Tennessee since I was three years of age. During my youth there was nothing in this state anywhere near the level of UTK football. No Titans. No Predators. No Grizzlies. You get the idea. The football Vols more or less represented the state. I became a fan of Volunteer football because the overwhelming majority of people I knew were Vol fans and because I was a Tennessean and it just seemed like the natural thing to do. When the time came to chose a college I never really thought about going to Knoxville. For me, it was just too big so I went to a small school in Georgia (Mercer) where I figured I would thrive and I think I made the right choice. Mercer has not had a football team since the 1940s so I was not faced with the prospect of switching alliegences. Now that Mercer competes in a basketball conference with Belmont and David Lipscomb it would be really easy for me, as a Nashvillian, to follow my alma mater if I chose to do so. I know plenty of people who are in similar situations, some of whom chose to split their alliegence and some who do not.

I can understand being for your alma mater. I'm a fan of Tennessee Tech's athletic programs as well since i'm a student there. The thing that gets me is when you're for one school in one sport and against them in the other when your other favorite team for that sport plays them. If that makes any sense...
