That was originally the plan. Close to happening as well, but Denver gave him a raise. By the time Shanahan was fired, that spot was already filled on our staff.

That was my first thought, too. If Shanahan had been canned sooner, UT might have a different OC.

Don't mean for that to sound like a strike or whatever against Chaney of course, but it seemed like Bates was Kiffin's first target for that position.

Bates is an incredible hire for USC...I guess that machine just keep on rolling...Bates won't be there long tho, He's got HC written all over him in the future.

USC can get anyone they want. Their OCs get head coaching jobs at $2-3 mil after a season or two.

True statement. This may have worked out in our favor. Bates wants to be an NFL head coach. If he is successfull at SC, he will be offered an OC spot or HC very soon. He will be at SC 2 years max. Chaney will provide stability for several years here.

That is what I hope CLK develops here. When assistants are being courted for HC jobs that means you are winning and doing something right.
