USA Today ranks Josh Heupel as #17 in top 25 of coaches

I agree, but you must give Day credit for adding him to the staff. Placing more knowledgeable and experienced personnel in key positions is an attribute of a great coach. In addition, it's effective leadership
The point was that the coaching that was displayed was that of Kelly and talent. Day didn't coach circles around anyone that day. You still ignore the fact that he was almost fired along with the coaches he hired.

Again, that was not the point of my comment.

Who was on the hot seat after a loss to Michigan?
I could make the argument that he out coached them when he hired Kelly months earlier. A lot of battles are won before they are fought due to preparation. Day hired an NFL offensive coordinator and a top 3 DC. Heupel could learn.

Heupel should probably be somewhere in the 11-14 range. He still has a few obstacles to surmount before he can climb higher in the rankings. Having a great season this year in spite of Nico’s departure would send a clear message.

No, Chip Kelly did. Along with the huge talent gap.

Do people forget Day was literally a playoff loss away from being fired. He's lucky that talent and Kelly saved his career.
And yet, he has the second highest winning percentage of all time.

I find it strange that the same people who thought Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt were great think someone like Ryan Day isn’t good and actually we have a better coach with absolutely no metric or comparison going in our guy’s favor.

He also only plays 1 or 2 good teams every year. What's his record vs Michigan or top 10 talent teams? I'm willing to bet that win% shrinks drastically. He didn't rebuild a struggling team, he inherited a playoff team.

Not sure I agree with that. Coach O won out with a very deflated Trojan group of players and staff and then went on to win the NC at LSU with a different staff and players. To my mind that's not accidental and demonstrates he had better than good HC chops under his belt. I'm not saying he was God's gift to changing the collegiate game. Nor was he a saint or an angel when it came to character. But he was a very good talent evaluator and could coach winning football.
Thats why i said he was a motivator. I just don't think he was ever best suited for long term success, but he could maximize what was there. I don't think left on his own he ever could have built that LSU team, which is why they started to fall apart after '19.

Whose record doesn’t shrink drastically against top 10 teams? Every single coach in the history of the sport has a drastically worse record against top 10 teams than against every other team. His record against top 10 teams is 15-8, which is outstanding. 2nd among all active coaches with at least 10 games coached against top 10 teams.

And why must someone take over a horrible team and build it into a powerhouse for Vol fans to give that coach any credit whatsoever? What sense does it make to dock someone because they took over a good team? We have seen many coaches take over good teams and run them into the ground. Sorry but there is no argument for Heupel over Day, other than “I’m a Vol fan and I want Heupel to be the best, so I’m just going to say he is the best.”

I don't necessarily hate these rankings. There are a few that I can pick at.

I am not a fan of Brian Kelly and his coaching. I think he should be below Campbell at least, probably around 15.

Kalen DeBoer is probably a little high as well. Factoring his time at Washington still puts him in top 12 or so IMO (Man the coaching talent seems very thin on this list).

Dabo Swinney should be ahead of Ryan Day. He has more National Championships, etc. Him and Smart should be 1-2.

Matt Rhule hasn't proven enough to be in top 25 IMO. I would have our old buddy Shane Beamer in that spot because he has done fairly well at South Carolina.

Overall, not a bad list IMO.

He had a much better roster. It makes a difference.
Well, roster building is part of the job. Do you think Saban was a brilliant tactician? No. He just out recruited everybody else by a significant margin. Huep is making what, 10 million a year? Part of his salary is predicated on building a roster that can compete for championships. Up to now he has underachieved in this area.
