Untouchable SEC rivalries - SEC Blog - ESPN

I will agree with #1, but The Third Saturday in October is definatley ahead of the Egg Bowl and I would argue even the Georgia/Florida game. Cant say I disagree with the rest though, except the Miss/Miss St. game should be much, much lower.

As a "newer Vol," being that Im young and have only started following UT since 2005 (my dad's doing), I personally feel more resentment towards Florida than Alabama. Is this a generational thing, due to Florida being in the East and a power of late?

Thoughts?

You're absolutely correct. Championship wise, Florida became more important of a win than Alabama. Historically speaking, I'd rather beat Alabama than Florida every day of the week.

I would also think the UT-UF game would be before UT-UGA

I hate Florida more than UGA, but if I had to chose a game with a rivalry atmosphere to go to that I knew would be a great game, it would be UGA-UT.

Even when I know we should beat UGA, I always have a warry feeling that they may still pull one out over us...

It also doesnt help that Florida has pwn3d us for the better part of two decades

I thought the same thing about the Mississippi Rivalry... I lived in MS for a while and most people where either Ole Miss or LSU fans

I think the difference is that the younger generation has not had much sucess against Florida. I am 26 and most of my memories of the Tennessee-Alabama rivalry have us winning most of them. I still find myself cussing David Palmer occassionally, but I think I would rather us beat Florida than Alabama.

I agree with your assessment. Also it is more important for Tennessee to beat Florida to get to the SEC championship considering both are in the SEC East.

the Florida rivalry really picked up the most steam when Spurrier was in charge and making all his wisecracks (like Kiffin did here) and they had that win streak against us.

Alabama's started when Fulmer turned Alabama in (adding fuel to the fire of their hate for us) and around the same time had a win streak of their own.

Im 22. I didnt start following UT football religiously until 2005. All I have had to see since then are two very dissapointing loses, two blowouts, and then this years moral victory. Granted we are 1-4 against Bama in that time frame too, but theres just something about that Gator chomp and jorts that really, really just get under my skin...

You can tell that someone that doesn't live for SEC football created this line-up..

1. Alabama vs. Auburn
2. Alabama vs. Tennessee
3. Florida vs. Tennessee
4. Alabama vs. LSU
5. Florida vs. Georgia
6. Florida vs. South Carolina
7. LSU vs. Ole Miss
8. Georgia vs. Tennessee
9. Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss
10. Auburn vs. Georgia

These are the rankings of which ones I think are most interesting to watch because of the intensity. I think watching SC and FL play is wayyy more interesting than SC and GA. Maybe I just hate watching GA.

What does everyone else think?

the "Tiger Bowl" is missing from this list, which I dont think is fair. The UF-LSU match is also omitted, which I think has been very entertaining latley (minus 2002 & 2008).

It depends on criteria. History or most important now?

Tennessee vs Florida doesn't have a long history like most of the SEC rivalries. However, in the 90's and early 00's it was one of the biggest games in the South.

Uhhh, I would say a mixture of both. Alabama and TN was still intense even when we were dominating them just because of the history of it, and UT-UF is intense because of the hatred, even though they dominate us. Just make it based on how important they are to you... for whatever reason.

Uhhh and I'm saying this is a never ending debate.

It's a generational thing.

The only two that are set in stone is Bama vs Auburn at #1 and Tennessee vs Bama at #2.

You'll still have younger fans argue that Bama vs Tennessee isn't as heated a rivalry as TN vs UF.

I don't get how no one adds Tenn V Ken? Longest Active winning streak over one team in the NCAA... Kentucky fans hate Tennessee more than anyone else...

I get Bamer V Tenn is huge, so is Tenn V Fla. And Tenn V UGA is getting there but, Tenn V Ken has got to be a big one..

so if UT loses to UK then UK-UF automatically becomes a huge rivalry? A big rivalry requires both team to have at least one win every quarter century

No it doesnt lol. And if it does please show me in the rule book of rivalrys that both teams have to win... Kentucky has beaten us.. 25 years ago.

Rivalry is all about hate and passion for the other team, and pride for you own. Not letting that other team ever beat you... Not how many times uve beaten or lost to em...

Tennessee fans consider Kentucky another win in November. That's not a rivalry.

Living down here in Atlanta, its funny to me how the UGA fans just don't get that we as Vol fans generally don't place that much stock in the rivalry with them.

On the list of rivals, they are third at best and it kills them every time i casually dismiss them in conversation.

Granted, I love beating the living tar out of them (see 3 last couple of meetings) but in no way do we consider them as big a rival as they do us.

It is easy to not care about that rivalry because they never beat us.. It is simple.
