If you are a football fan, I just watched a documentary on PBS about the 1899 University of the South football season. It was amazing. Spoiler alert: Tennessee lost 46-0. No clue how you can find it but worth the effort if you do.

Shirley Majors coached Sewanee from around 1957 through 1977.

They had a 13-man roster, had a 6-day road trip where they played 5 different teams, and shutout every one of them (LSU, Ole Miss, Tulane, Texas, and Texas A&M). That year they went 12-0 and outscored their opponents 322-10, with John Heisman's Auburn team being the only team to score on them.

I remember playing St. Andrews (Sewanee) in high school football as we were both in the old Duck River Valley Conference. They always played us tougher than they were supposed to but we always managed to eke out a win. Both schools are in Franklin County.

We had our week long high school football camp there in early 80’s and wasn’t so beautiful during 2 a days…ha…though certainly a few degrees cooler in the mountains.
I was at football camp at Sewanee about 82 or 83. I remember the evenings being cool (weather-wise) but man the two-a-days were brutal.

They have a first class summer music festival too where some of the best music students in the country come for an intense series of classes and affordable public concerts. Went to a ton of them to listen to great classical music for basically $5 a pop

Yep. My dad played for him and they remained great friends until Coach died in the 80s. When he died, we got his bird dogs, Chico and Randy.

I remember being a child and Coach would sit in the kitchen before they’d go bird hunting, while Mom fed him breakfast and he talked our ears off. He was waiting for my dad to get dressed and Coach would say, “I don’t know what’s taking so long…those birds don’t care how sweet you smell.”

He died of a heart attack while quail hunting. They found him because Chico and Randy stayed right with him and someone saw the dogs tails sticking up out of the field grass. Or so I was told.
