From Tony Basillo's website:

Director of Player Personnel Paul Gonnella left UNC Friday. He is believed to be headed to Tennessee.

Gonnella basically served as John Blake's right-hand man and was an integral, behind-the-scenes component in UNC's recruiting efforts.

UNC tried to keep him, but couldn't match some of the non-financial requests.

Those who are truly insiders know how important Gonnella was to UNC's recruiting efforts in the current class and already in the 2010 class (UNC is drastically in better shape with the 2010 class than they were with the 2009 class at the same stage).

Gonnella did a lot of coordinating of recruiting, which allowed Blake to focus on recruting UNC's top targets. Compare Blake's recruiting accomplishments with the 2009 class to the 2008 class -- it's almost night and day.

To put it simply, this is a significant loss.

im sorry but w-i-t-h is the Director of Player Personnel? what direct impact does he have on recruiting?

He's basically a glorified assistant. He makes sure each coach has what they need to go out and recruit.

Makes sure coaches have a plane, and sets up trips and all that.

Sounds like it wouldn't matter, but they can be a HUGE asset to a program.

No problem.

The only thing is I'm not sure if he would fill that position here or not, and who was in that position. A lot of jobs like that the general public doesn't hear about until someone leaves...
