Georgia Bulldogs assistant Kevin Sherrer: 'Wasn't a hard decision' to join Tennessee Vols football staff

Kevin Sherrer, like most college football assistants, wants to become a head coach one day, and every move up the ladder brings him one step closer to that goal.

In other words, Georgia’s outside linebackers coach didn’t hesitate to accept an offer to become Tennessee’s defensive coordinator.

The former University of Alabama tight end didn’t hesitate to follow longtime friend and fellow Alabama graduate Jeremy Pruitt in crossing The Third Saturday in October divide, either.

Sherrer, a tight end at Alabama from 1993-95 and former Crimson Tide teammate of Pruitt, led a job as Bama’s director of player development to become the defensive coordinator at South Alabama in 2013, and just one year later he was hired to coach Mark Richt’s outside linebackers at Georgia. Kirby Smart retained Sherrer on his staff in 2016 — a staff with Pruitt at defensive coordinator — and he’s helped the Bulldogs win an SEC championship and a berth in the upcoming College Football Playoff.

As soon as Sherrer’s Bulldogs — just like Pruitt’s Tide — end their season, though, he’ll be on the next available flight to Knoxville to join his friend of a quarter-century in Knoxville. And he’ll be excited about joining and helping lead a staff full of high-profile assistants.

"The crazy thing is Jeremy and I have known each other for 25 years,” Sherrer said during a Saturday media availability ahead of Monday’s Rose Bowl (and CFP semifinal) game in Los Angeles. “We've played together. We've coached together at multiple places. And it's almost like when you get into the coaching world and become friends with these guys you're always talking about coaching — 'Hey, maybe we'll get a chance to coach together again,' or whatever.

“So knowing him, knowing the staff he's put together, it wasn't a hard decision to make, I can say.”

As much as Sherrer has loved his time in Athens and Tuscaloosa, the opportunity for a position promotion at one of college football’s all-time winningest programs was an opportunity he couldn’t refuse.

“It’s big,” Sherrer said when asked about becoming a defensive coordinator. “When you get into coaching you want to move up the coaching ranks, and when you get the opportunity to coach at places like Georgia, and be a part of Alabama and things like that, you obviously want to be a coordinator and move on and one day hopefully be a head coach. So I'm really excited. It's a great place to be, it’s a great opportunity, I know a lot of the coaches personally and they're great men. So I’m excited about it.

“It’s a little bittersweet because I've got a lot of good friends here, too. But it’ll be fun. I’m really looking forward to it."

Every transition has its tough moments, though, and Sherrer left no doubt that he’ll always be indebted to Smart for the opportunity to keep him on staff in Athens and help take the Bulldogs to the next level.

“I probably won’t appreciate it until years to come, because we’re so busy in what we do [that] we don’t actually get the chance to soak in what it actually means,” Sherrer said. “But it’s been big. I probably wouldn’t be going on to the next job if it weren’t for some of the accomplishments that Coach Smart’s been able to get done here.”

It's got to be a tough decision to leave a winning team like Georgia to go to a program on the re-build. But, a great way to prove you can make winners. Good luck to him. Go Vols!

Great we get to help more former Alabama players. :thud:

I mean it's a "lose-lose" situation. I mean of course I want Tennessee to win, but... I guess it's just root for them to win and try not to think about the other part. Sorry guys this is just hard for me, because I hate Alabama the most followed closely by Florida.

Who gives a **** where they went to school? It doesn’t matter at all. They are hired guns.

When it's Alabama or Florida it matters to me. I hate Alabama so much I can not stand it. I get tired of seeing all these band wagon people wearing their stuff too!!

Sherrer. He has called plays and ran his side of the ball before. Helton never has. I like Helton also though.

Helton had a lot to do with the playcalling at USC so I've read especially on 3rd downs. I did read under Brohm that it was Brohm who actually called the offense at WKU but it was super-explosive.

So you hate Gillespie as well? Coaching is a different animal than fandom. There are rarely any coaches that are coaching at their alma maters. You’ll get over it when the wins start pouring in.

Damn straight. Read an article today about the chances of Dabo going back to Bama. According to Dabo's son- what for?

Tennessee is Pruitt's team now and he has free reign to put his stamp on it and he's gonna do it. Good coaches don't walk away from something they've built. Being raised near the Tennessee River in NE AL. he's just as much Tennessee as you can find. Let him smell a championship here and he'll stay.

I do not expect all coaches to be Tn guys, just not Alabama and Florida guys. If it was just one of each that would be one thing, but a staff full...:thud:

Like when Roy Williams left Kansas for North Carolina? I wouldn't read too much into what Dabo's son says now, I mean what do you expect him to say?

It’s almost an..”.if you can’t beat em, join em situation”.
Yes, we are now in bed with Bammers....but, it’s not the first time with names like Battle, Cutcliffe, and Hart....and we intermarried the Gators with Dickey and Woodruff..and now, we are also getting some Bulldog stench on us.
But, what are you gonna do? We just don’t have enuf former Vols ready and able to coach at the highest levels.
So, we have reached out to our biggest rivals to lead us back out of mediocrity and, hopefully, back amongst the elite. It is what it is.

Sickening isn't it?!!!!!

About enough former Vols to coach, I know they can not be all former Vols, just not from those two schools and Alabama especially!!!
