Yes, it’s just one of those things where the timing never allowed it to come to fruition. Although I don’t know how long Self would have stayed in Stillwater. I know he loves the school but deep down I think he always wanted to be at a Kansas or Kentucky type program.

I’ve always said one of my favorite “what ifs” is what would have happened with Self had Lon Kruger not left Illinois for the Atlanta Hawks? He would have definitely been back at Tulsa in 2000. Does Tennessee make a run at him after firing Jerry Green? Michigan? Louisville? Of course if he’s still at Tulsa there’s little chance that Tennessee would have hired Buzz Peterson from App State.
