I know that UAB is our next opponent but am I the only one finding it odd what various Vol sites are saying about this game. There seems to be some uncertainty surrounding this game from CDD down to writers. I know that most coaches play up their opponent during the week regardless of who it is, but I'm not catching that vibe. It's almost as though they are suggesting it will take our best effort to beat UAB.

Am I the only one thinking we should drum UAB without any problems?

UAB shouldn't win, but we've had some weird games against them in the past.

I remember struggling with them the last time we played them. I also remember thinking then we had hit rock bottom. Then the Wyoming disaster struck and that took it's place for rock bottom.

That was in 2005. We beat them 35-3 or something like that in 2008.

We have too much talent/coaching to lose this game. I know anything can happen (see VT), but we shouldn't have any issues winning this game.

I'm just pointing out that UAB has been a weird game for us the past few seasons. I think the coaches are making sure we don't lose focus and drop one to a team we have no business losing to (see Wyoming).

This is a hard team to get a lock on considering how well they played against 2 top 10 teams before flaming out late. I suppose that is why the writers are being wishy-washy.

There is no way the game should be close. If UT plays like they did against Florida they should win by at least two scores if not more. I haven't seen what DD has said about the game but I don't see them losing at all. This should be a good game for Simms to fix some things and the o line to get some confidence.

Well, UAB beat Dooley's LSU team back in 2000. The week before they beat us, in fact. If UAB beat us and we turned around and beat LSU the next week, I guess that wouldn't be the worst thing ever.

Their offense has looked pretty good against Sun Belt competition so far. Their defense looks like crap. We should be able to score.

I sure hope so. If we dont win by at least 3 scores something is wrong and if it wasnt for that fake punt i still think we win . GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just finding it hard to believe this is even a topic of discussion to be honest. I know we aren't world beaters, but we certainly aren't on UAB or the Sun Belt's level either.

From the looks of it, UAB is particularly bad this year. I talked to folks that went to the Troy game (that UAB won with a Hail Mary) and they said UAB was pathetic.

Strangely, they are finally at a full scholarship strength but apparently they gave schollies to bums.

if what i just looked at online is up-to-date, UAB's starting offense shows:
QB senior (3V)
WR junior (2V)
WR senior (1V)
TE senior (3V)
OT soph (1V) 6'7", 295
OT soph (1V) 6'3", 300
OG senior (3V) 6'2", 300
OG junior (1V) 6'4", 300
C senior (3V) 6'2", 290

They run a 4-3 defense with:
DE junior (2V), 6', 265
DE junior (2V), 6', 265
DT junior (2V) 6'4", 280
NT junior (2V) 6', 265
LB junior (JC)
LB junior (2V)
LB soph (1V)
CB soph (1V)
CB soph (1V)
S soph (SQ) (what does SQ mean?)
S soph (1V)

so... it appears that they've got some experienced starters, albeit somewhat of a short defensive line and relative youth in the defensive secondary.

Considering what we're starting on offensive line (3 true freshmen and 2 sophs), I'm guessing there might be concern over the disparity in experience between the starting units...

Just a guess on my part. UAB is, IMO, one of those lower-level teams that you should be able to beat, but occasionally, that's a team that has the ability to jump up and bite you in the ass. I'd throw Southern Miss into that kind of category as well.

Hopefully that's the case. I'm not really worried about this game, quite frankly...

Maybe what we're hearing is Dooley being Dooley... giving the respect before hanging 50 on 'em....

Maybe you missed Coach Dooley's presser on Monday were he said UAB could beat us not playing their best game.

we should be able to out talent them running the football and throwing short passes with big runs after the catch with our talented recievers

As has been said, Dooley remembers very well that UAB beat LSU on Homecoming in Baton Rouge during Saban's first year. We're just not good enough to overlook anybody.

That being said, we should beat UAB. They are not very good. Joe Webb was their offense last year. The new QB had a big day in the comeback win over Troy St. On defense, their front 7 is decent, but the secondary is weak.

This is a sandwich game. It is smack dab between two top ten teams at home and two huge SEC road games.

If Dooley allowed our team to go into this game thinking it was a "break" or a "easy win" we could surely be in a battle to the end and maybe get upset. He is making sure that he uses every opportunity to let them know this game is just as big as the other 4. Which in all actuality it is, because we need every win we can get to get to a bowl!

No, I've read them along with what the other writers are saying and that's what prompted this thread. I just can't believe that we are having to have this discussion. Based on talent alone it would take UAB's best game and a pretty piss poor performance on our part for them to win this game. Like I said, I know coaches play up the upcoming opponent, but it's almost as though everyone is seriously curious as to how this game will shake out.

A part of me is thinking if they are worried about UAB, what was and will go through their minds when we play ranked opponents? There seemed to be more optimism before the Florida game than this one and that's absurd.

That's because you are not a coach trying to keep a team full of young, inexperienced players from overlooking this opponent. CDD is.

Very true, and I certainly understand that aspect. With wins being a hard commodity this year, I would find it hard to believe our guys would overlook anyone on the schedule.

I'd prefer they beat both of them.

Am I the only one thinking we should drum UAB without any problems?

two true freshman getting first starts in the OL..

One senior WR out, the other banged up (he will play and he will stay banged up all year. this is just carry over from UTM game injury. Will nag him from now on until he just sits for a while).

Starting RB dinged up.

OL coming off worse game of year..

Your best DT is dinged up and a walk-on who played his very first snaps is your best backup at DT..

and you believe Tennessee should drum UAB with no problems? I'm sure you were aware of all the above and you still think UT drums them then there is nothing anyone can say to change your view IMO.
