Some context from a few years back. Long, but worth the read.
Presence before power: why China became a near-Arctic state - this is by the Clingendael Institute, a Dutch think tank.
TLDR: This is a piece about China, but Greenland (and Canada) have a role in development of vast arctic resources as well as northern global shipping routes which would often, otherwise, involve the Panama Canal (and the USA). This goes a ways toward explaining US policy. Have we heard Trump specifically talk about Panama, Greenland and Canada? Yes, yes we have. So go big on the arctic, because Russia and China already are.
