Yeah, I used to live near Savannah.

The sugarshack ice cream place is good. Beach sucks though, pier is ok.

Oh, that sucks. The wedding is on the south beach. Thanks for the ice cream tip. I'm sure we will hit that up at some point.

Really strong undertoe (Sp?). A middle school friend of mine drowned there. Watch the kids.

The father of one of my fraternity brothers owned the amusement park for years and years. He sold it and built a hotel. I had not been since the early 1990s but went out there for a stroll one day a couple of years ago. That new bandstand thing at the pier was nice but the place is still the armpit of the Southeastern Coast. Trashy as Myrtle Beach with less to do. If I were you I'd just get a room in downtown Savannah and enjoy the town's history.

edit: I did not post this to be a smart alek or anything. The place really sucks.

Great! We booked our beach house over 2 months ago. Hope it doesn't suck as bad as you claim.

Go to Williams seafood. It is to the right just as you are exiting the last bridge to the Island. Other than that I recommend that you spend your free time at Hilton Head or on River Street in Savannah. Tybee is a dump!

Sorry Lex. Williams is long gone. You can still get a whiff of what it was like by going to Paula Dean's brother's restaurant (Uncle Bubba's) but it is nowhere near the same.

Really....it has been a while. A man moves to Kentucky for 18 years and his favorite seafood dive vanishes overnight?

In that case just spend the money and head to Elizabeths or 1790 in Savannah either one will offer an unrivaled dinning experience, but they will cost you. Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House is also a safe bet. I like the fried shrimp and onion rings at Carey Hilliards but if you wind up there do not, I repeat do not miss the Brunswick Stew. It is much more of a chain like aptmosphere.

Whatever you do, do not eat on river street. It is full of tourist traps.

Old story on Williams burning. Guess it was '04. WTOC, Savannah, Georgia, news, weather and sports | Arson the Cause of Fire at Williams Seafood

There is another place out there near Tybee called the Crab Shack where I have been once and it was okay. They have a live alligator pit and you can buy dog food that they let you feed to the gators on a pole and string. The Crab Shack "Where The Elite Eat In Their Bare Feet!"

If you like chicken fingers and beer there is still a Spanky's on Tybee.

Spankys is a grease pit, but the chicken fingers are legendary. The sweat tea is very good as well. I think there is a Spankys on River Street as well.

Thanks for the link HB. I've caught flounder and eaten on the same day. Still haven't had any better than the flounder at Williams.

Lex, when I was a little younger some friends and I used to go to a fish camp on the May River near Bluffton, SC and gig flounder at night. The mullet would jump in and out of the boat. Union Camp owned miles of riverfront property and it really felt like you were in the wilderness although we could boat to Hilton Head in very short time. Really good memories.

Bubbas is on the right before you cross the the bridge to go on the coastal highway. Awesome place for seafood, but be prepared to wait, it is always packed. I forgot about that place. Also, visit Fort Pulaski, a mason civil war fort. Very nice place. If you're into that sorta stuff.

Good ole River Street, can't go wrong with that place for the party.

Also, do not venture off the "touristy" areas. Crime is HORRIBLE there.

You have to try Carey Hilliards for lunch or something, I loved eating there, it is a unique place.

The haunted tours are lame, don't even bother.

Alot of golf venues there, a little too pricey for me, but hey, give it a try if you like.

I think we have talked about this before. I grew up fishing on the May River. It has been years now, but it was my favorite trout dop on the intracoastal ww.

kev, I think you need to provide a synopsis of your impressions post visit.

I thought the place was very nice, as a whole. Nothing like the armpit portrayed. Guess I wasn't going in expecting a resort town, so maybe that had something to do with my perspective. The only issue we seemed to have was the cockroaches (about 6 total) in the rental house. We chalked that up to the climate. The house was amazing otherwise! Everyone seemed to have a great time, and that is the most important part.

I am glad you had good time and it sounds like you had Tybee in the proper perspective. I think alot of people go there assuming it will be a beach resort destination and wind up disappointed.

We spent the last day in Savannah and I had what I think might be the best pizza in my life.

Here's what I've learned about Tybee from this thread:

It's a trashy dump with crappy beaches.
You're kids will die if they get in the ocean.
The ice cream's not bad.
